Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade is a great team of locals and 100% volunteer. We provide an important service to our community when they need us most.

We attend around 100 call-outs a year. We attend around 80 call-outs a year - about half are to fires. We also respond to medical incidents, motor vehicle incidents and other requests for help.

A huge shoutout to one of our own, Firefighter Will Anderson, who is currently representing the Central Otago Men’s Hockey Team at the National Tournament in Wellington.

Will’s dedication, teamwork, and commitment are qualities we see every day at the brigade, and it’s great to see those same attributes helping him compete on the national stage.

We’re incredibly proud to see our members achieving success both in the community and on the sports field. Best of luck to Will and the Central Otago team for the remainder of the tournament! 👏🔥

A special thank you to Upper Clutha Transport and The Luggate Hotel for their support of the Central Otago Men’s Hockey Team. Community support like this helps create opportunities for local players to compete at the highest level. 👏🏑

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of Saturday night’s vegetation fire in Albert Town, and we’re looking for some help from people living nearby or who were in the area at the time.

It’s too soon to say if the circumstances are suspicious – at this stage our investigators are working to confirm where and how the fire started.

Here’s how you can help: Email the fire investigation team [email protected]
• If you were in the area shortly before 7.30pm when the fire was reported, and you saw anything that may be relevant
• If you have photos or video from the early stages of the fire – especially anything taken around the lagoon end of the reserve south of Lagoon Avenue, between 7.15pm and 7.45pm.

Better late than never!

Our Easter Weekend at Warbirds Over Wanaka round up 🛩

This year had us stationed at the Airport for 4 days - Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun. The weather was not terribly desirable but thank golly for Level 2s!

It was great to have the 2 lads from Kaiapoi join us for 3 days - they are welcome in our station any time 🙌🏼

We had a Community Engagement tent setup alongside our trucks and the team did a great job of getting the public through, talking fire safety and safe meeting points, as well as some fun in the VR headset.

A bit quieter than usual on the planes front due to no Airforce but an enjoyable few days of great flying was enjoyed, a credit to the organizers and pilots for being able to pivot after that announcement and still put on a good show.

Great to work alongside Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade and Queenstown Airport crew again with the Command Truck taking the lead.

Thanks to our team for giving up their long weekend to ensure the safety of others once again, its a massive feat for a small brigade like ours, and one that doesnt go thankless.

Ready for take-off at Warbirds Over Wānaka 2026 🚒✈️

Training night at the airport is done, and now we’re counting down to a huge weekend on the ground.

Our crew will be onsite for all 3 days alongside Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade and Queenstown Airport fire crew in the Panther 🐈‍⬛, helping keep things running safely.

We are thankful to have 2 fellow Fireys from Kaiapoi Fire Brigade come and help us out over the Airshow days - we hope our home baking impresses them 🤞

If you’re heading along, make sure you come and find us down the western end of the runway. We’ll have our tent set up next to the trucks, and we’d love for you to stop by for a chat.

Don’t be shy - we love meeting new people and fellow fireys from near and far. 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒🚒

🚒 FLEET EFFICIENCY UPDATE 🚒

In response to the continued rise in fuel costs, we are pleased to announce a new initiative aimed at improving operational efficiency across our fleet.

Effective immediately, our trucks have been fitted with wind sails to assist with forward movement whenever favourable conditions allow. This environmentally conscious upgrade is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption, provided the wind direction is cooperative.

While this may result in slightly slower response times on still days, crews will be undertaking a daily wind dance to encourage stronger gusts and improve travel times where possible.

We appreciate the community’s support as we continue to explore innovative, sustainable solutions for emergency response.

🔊 The siren goes! We’re all in various stages of everyday life when it happens...

☕ Mid-cuppa? Down it goes
🍽 Just sat down to dinner after a long day? Sorry family…
🏢 At work? “Can someone cover me?” (will the boss roll their eyes at another callout? 😬)
🏠 At home with the kids?
Quick - call the neighbour? Drop them to Nana? Aunty? Uncle? 👦👧
👗👖What am I wearing?
Jeans under Level 2 gear? Not ideal… things get HOT 🔥
🧦 Got the right socks? (you learn this the hard way🦶🏼)
🚗 Jump in the car - who else is responding? Do we have a crew? Do we have a driver? Did I turn the stove off 🤔

🏣 Arrive at station
👩🏻‍🚒 Gear on
🚒 Truck started and we’re off 🚨

Now these kinds of questions start running through our heads…

What’s the job? 🔥 Fire? 🚗 Crash? 🚨 Alarm activation? 🩺 Medical call?

🤷🏼‍♂️ How big?
⏳️ How long will we be out?
🍽 When did I last eat?

🤔 Did I actually turn the stove off…?

🧭 Sometimes we spend longer finding the address than we do at the job

💧 Start hydrating - we get hot 🥵 we get sweaty 😓 we get dirty 🥴

🕑 Sometimes we’re done in 30 minutes 🕣️ Sometimes we’re there for 7 hours

Some jobs stay with you longer than others 😔

🚒 Then it’s back to station...
Clean gear, restock the truck, reset everything so we’re ready to do it all again next time

Finally… home time 🏠
Cold dinner/breakfast 🍽
Kids to collect 👦👧
Very necessary shower 🚿
Very welcoming bed 🛏

Sometimes it’s only for a couple of hours before the siren 🔊 goes again

Sometimes it’s up for work with tired eyes 👀 and aching muscles

That’s volunteer life 😊
