Attention Walkers and Cyclists

From Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Upper Clutha Tracks Trust will be upgrading the Hawea River track between Albert Town and Hawea.
The track will generally remain open, however machinery will be in use and users are requested to obey signs and directions from contractors.
The work is expected to take two months.

Awesome work on another fabulous planting day along the new Hāwea True Right River track. Thank you Te Kakano & volunteers for planting 200 more trees!
Hawea Store & Kitchen provided another impressive afternoon tea, thank you and the generous hospitality from the Murray's.

Note the Cameron Creek Track to Hook has been damaged and the bridge at Pawsons Crossing (Cadrona River at Albert Town) is also closed due to damage to the bridge supports. This restricts access to the Upper Clutha River Track between Albert Town and Stevenson Road.

Our second planting session along the new (true right) Lake Hāwea River Track is coming up!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again for another day of planting! Our first session was such a success, and we can’t wait to get more native plants in the ground. 🌱

The new Hāwea River Track runs from the Hāwea Dam to Camp Hill Bridge along the true right of the Hāwea River. It’s being developed as a slower-paced walking and biking track, offering a more relaxed alternative to the faster commuter trail on the true left.

We’d love you to join us and help bring this special stretch of the river to life with native planting! 🌿

📅 Date: Saturday 29th August
🕜 Time: 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm

📍 Location: Hāwea River Track

Preferred access is from Camp Hill road or Hāwea Dam, 2km or a short bike in from either end.
There is also limited access from Te Awa Rd, (please carpool to limit impact of vehicles if parking here), refer to the access maps below and let us know if you have any questions regarding the access.

Please allow plenty of time (45mins from either end) to ensure everyone is ready to go for the Health and Safety briefing at 1.30pm.

Please note:
* No dogs!
* Respect private land areas noted on the access maps.
* Gumboots recommended

Bring your own cup for afternoon tea.
*If you have them, your own gardening gloves and tools.
*Water bottle and sturdy shoes.
*We will have tools, gloves and afternoon tea to share.

What a cracker of an afternoon planting on the new Hāwea True Right Track.
Thank you Te Kakano, nzbiketrails, and Love Wanaka for supporting this planting.
Also Hāwea Store & Kitchen for providing the delicious afternoon tea, and Gareme & Carolyne Murray for their hospitality!
We are so lucky to have such a wonderful bunch of community-minded volunteers who share a real passion for this wonderful place and are willing to give their time and energy toward projects that will benefit the entire community for generations to come.
