Today our tamariki o Ngāi Tahu (children of Ngāi Tahu iwi descent) had an amazing opportunity to experience Science at the Takutai o Te T**i Marae (Marae at Colac Bay). Here we joined students from Riverton and Waiau, to be officially welcomed onto our Ngāi Tahu marae with a pōwhiri. This included karanga, kōrero, waiata and the sharing of kai.

Following that, we heard from the Otago University scientists who taught us about the Fjords in Fiordland National Park and their studies about the way carbon is stored. We looked at core samples taken from the Sounds and the layers of soil collected - some dating back thousands of years.

These experts have the ability to look at the soil samples and pinpoint when major events such as earthquakes or landslides have occurred in the past. Did you know that carbon takes on many forms? It is the building block of all organic life!

Ākonga went around three different hands-on learning stations - guided by the University experts. They found out about the unique fjords and how they were carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. There is a top layer of fresh water with salt water below. Fun, hands-on activities helped us to understand how the fjords act as massive carbon sinks that are extremely efficient at carbon sequestration.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to connect with our Ngāi Tahu whānau and learn about the fantastic work led by the University of Otago, GNS Science, Ngāi Tahu, and the Fiordland Marine Guardians. ‘The project investigates how deep fjord basins and mature indigenous rainforests function as massive, highly efficient carbon sinks’.

A huge thank you to all of the families and community members who gave up their time to help at our Takitimu Primary School working bee yesterday.

Your willingness to lend a hand has made a real difference to our school grounds, and your support shows what a special community we have. Many hands truly do make light work, and we couldn’t have achieved so much without you.

Thank you for your time, effort, and community spirit. We are incredibly grateful!
