Today we mark 25 years since the World Trade Centre attack. To memorialise the 343 brave emergency service members killed in the attack and those lost over the years at home, one of our members has taken part in the Sky tower Memorial climb in Auckland.

Josh dedicated his climb today to Firefighter Dennis P. O’berg of Ladder 105. Dennis had completed the fire academy and joined Ladder 105 just 6 weeks before the attack.

We take this day to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the fire service.

This week’s training consisted on running two scenarios out on our local tugs involving our new training dummy! Firstly the crew had to work together to get the patient out whilst on a stretcher through the narrow stairways (keep in mind, the space is TIGHT 😂) Next up was a snap rescue which required being fully donned n started whilst working quickly 🏃

In August, our brigades responded to 9 vegetation fires across the Nelson Marlborough District, caused by a range of factors including escaped burn piles, old burn piles reigniting, and accidental ignitions. 🚒

As we move into spring, warmer, drier, and windier conditions can quickly turn a seemingly extinguished burn pile into a vegetation fire. 🌿🌞💨🔥

Even when a pile looks out, heat and embers can remain buried deep inside and flare up days or weeks later.

👉 If you have previously burned vegetation on your property, please take the time to:
✅ Turn the pile over
✅ Break apart any remaining material
✅ Soak it thoroughly with water
✅ Check that it is cold to the touch

‼️If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.‼️

Introducing the newest member of the PVFB

Name: Pending
Rank: Probationary Training Dummy – Brigade Support
Role: Casualty simulation and firefighter training.
Strengths: Patient, dependable and willing to be rescued from almost anywhere…without too many complaints!
Weaknesses: Communication, mobility and standing up without assistance.
Special interests: Vehicle extrication, ladder rescues, confined spaces and being carried around by firefighters.
Fun fact: He has already volunteered to be trapped, dropped, dragged, rescued and bandaged—all without asking for the keys to the truck.

There is just one problem: our newest Support Officer does not have a name!

We are therefore launching a competition to find him a suitable name. Suggestions can be serious, funny, fire-related or completely original—but they must be appropriate enough to use around the station and during public training events.
Drop your suggestion in the comments below, along with a short explanation if there is a story behind it. Entries close 31st August 2026, after which the brigade will select the winning name.
