The city of Ganzhou in the People’s Republic of constructed nearly 1,000 years ago a comprehensive system that combines engineered drainage channels, hydraulic control structures, and natural storage ponds to simultaneously manage stormwater, urban wastewater, and river flooding.

Its principles resonate with contemporary approaches to nature-based solutions and sponge city wherein
1️⃣ drainage channels and deep pipelines minimize the risk of surface flooding during heavy rainfall
2️⃣ outlets located along the wall automatically close or open in response to changing river levels, and
3️⃣ interconnected ponds capture excess runoff and supply for and aquaculture.
