As Hon Consul-General of Tonga in Portugal I offer heartfelt condolences to my many Norwegian friends and to the people of Norway on the passing today of their much-loved King Harald V, aged 89. I have regularly visited Norway - first in 1989, and most recently in 2022 and have very fond memories of each and every visit across this ancient country.

Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, King Harald served Norway for more than 35 years. The outpouring of public grief today is perhaps the clearest testament to the deep affection and respect Norwegians held for their King and the constitutional monarchy.

As his 53-year-old son begins his own reign as King Haakon VIII, I wish His Majesty every strength and success - mindful also of his longstanding connections with both Portugal and the Kingdom of Tonga, which he officially visited as Crown Prince in 2019 and was received by His Majesty King Tupou VI.

Hvil i fred, Deres Majestet. 🇳🇴

🇹🇴🇵🇹 NUKU’ALOFA & VIANA DO CASTELO | TWO CITIES OF LOVE

As His Majesty’s Hon Consul-General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal, it was a great pleasure to pay a courtesy visit to the President of the Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo, Luís Nobre Luís Nobre, during the extraordinary Romaria de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia.

It was a particular honour to join the Mayor on the balcony of the historic Paços do Concelho to witness the magnificent Desfile da Mordomia — more than 1,000 women filling the streets in traditional Vianese costumes, many adorned with extraordinary displays of the distinctive gold jewellery for which Viana is famous.

The Romaria is deeply rooted in Viana’s faith, maritime traditions and popular culture. Each August, processions, traditional dress, music and dancing transform the city in honour of Our Lady of Agony, whose devotion has long been associated with Viana’s fishermen and people of the sea. Over 1 million people attend this 9 day festival.

There is also a beautiful connection between Viana do Castelo and Tonga. Viana is synonymous with the heart and with love, symbolised by its famous Coração de Viana, while Tonga’s capital, Nukuʻalofa, translates as “the abode of love.”

I very much look forward to developing opportunities to promote Tongan culture here and to strengthening the bonds of friendship between Viana do Castelo and Nukuʻalofa — two cities, on opposite sides of the world, united by a wonderful association with love.

My warmest thanks to Mayor Luís Nobre and Câmara Municipal Viana Castelo for such an exceptional welcome.
