2197.

What does it say about political inclusion when women make up only 443 of the 4,408 candidates cleared for Nigeria’s 2027 National Assembly elections?

The numbers are up from 2023, but women remain a small minority on the ballot.

The debate now goes beyond participation: political financing, party structures, violence, media visibility and the pathways to political power all matter.

Who gets on the ballot shapes who gets a chance to shape the country.

Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), other women’s groups and civil society organisations have expressed concern over the fact that only 443 women are amon

NMG’s latest editorial reshuffle has sparked a bigger conversation about gender and power in African media.

11 senior editorial appointments were announced across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, all went to men.

The question isn’t whether those appointed are qualified. It’s whether qualified women are getting a fair pathway to the rooms where editorial decisions are made.

Women can be well represented in newsrooms and still be underrepresented where it matters most: deciding which stories lead, whose voices are heard and which issues receive attention.

Representation isn’t only about who holds the microphone. It’s also about who decides who gets to speak.

Nation Media Group’s latest regional editorial restructuring has triggered an uncomfortable question about the place of women in African newsrooms: who gets to decide whose voice is heard?
