8 July 2026 is observed as”World Skin Health Day” ! 11 out of 21 NTDs are labeled as “Skin related NTDs”. During the World Health Assembly on 24 May 2025 adopted resolution WHA78.15 recognizing Skin diseases as a global public health priority. These skin diseases also encompass 11 skin related NTDs (including Leprosy). Theme of this year 2026 is “Better knowledge.Better Skin Health “. NTD Programme Update: Strengthening Diagnostic Capacity in Eswatini
The Eswatini Ministry of Health's Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Programme participated in the 2026 Professional Diagnostic Training and Technology Transfer for NTDs, aimed at strengthening national laboratory capacity for the diagnosis and surveillance of neglected tropical diseases.
The training, led by Prof. Chia-Kwung Fan, focuses on the screening and differential diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichostrongylus orientalis, and hookworm using the Merthiolate-Iodine-Formaldehyde (MIF) Concentration Method and the Agar Plate Culture Method.
During the first day, participants attended a keynote session on the public health impact of these infections, followed by intensive hands-on laboratory practicals on specimen preprocessing and parasite identification. The training equips laboratory personnel and NTD programme staff with advanced diagnostic skills that will enhance surveillance, improve case detection, and support evidence-based decision-making for soil-transmitted helminth control and elimination efforts in Eswatini.
This initiative reflects the NTD Programme's commitment to building a skilled workforce, adopting innovative diagnostic technologies, and strengthening partnerships to accelerate progress towards the elimination of neglected tropical diseases.
