His Excellency President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s unwavering commitment to democracy, peace, sovereignty, and regional stability during remarks delivered on May 20, marking the second anniversary of his administration.

In his address, President Lai emphasized that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation, firmly dedicated to safeguarding its democratic constitutional system, civil liberties, and the free and democratic way of life enjoyed by its 23 million people.

President Lai reiterated Taiwan’s steadfast commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the Indo-Pacific region, while rejecting coercion and unilateral attempts to alter the status quo. He further expressed Taiwan’s willingness to engage in healthy and orderly exchanges with China based on the principles of parity and dignity, while making clear that Taiwan will never compromise its sovereignty, democracy, or national dignity.

Highlighting Taiwan’s role as a responsible member of the international community, President Lai underscored the importance of strengthening national defense reforms, enhancing whole-of-society resilience, and advancing credible deterrence capabilities to preserve peace and prevent conflict.

The President also noted that Taiwan will continue to work closely with like-minded international partners to uphold regional peace, stability, and security.

On the economic front, President Lai highlighted Taiwan’s strategic role in global supply chains, particularly in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, defense industries, and next-generation communications. He reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to innovation, industrial transformation, and sustainable economic development.

Reflecting on Taiwan’s democratic journey, the President noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election in 1996 — a defining milestone in the nation’s democratic development and a testament to the Taiwanese people’s enduring commitment to freedom, peace, and democracy.
