❗️Did you know that a 911 dispatcher is one of the most important people you never see❗️

As we begin National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week💛
We want to recognize our 911 dispatchers….and we have some of the best!
We are thankful for their dedication and commitment to their profession, and to the public they serve, it does not go unnoticed.
We are grateful for each one of you more than you know!!

In addition to answering multiple 911 lines, ☎️our dispatchers also dispatch for 21 fire departments, 🚒and 5 police departments 🚔in Rapides Parish, requiring excellent multi tasking skills.
The types of calls that our dispatchers are subject to and must endure at times are not for the faint of heart.
They work 12 hour rotating shifts that include holidays/weekends that keep them from thier families on many occasions.

So not only this week, but every week…we celebrated you, the true first responders and hero’s on the other end of the line.

Our Administrative offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. We hope everyone has a blessed Easter weekend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time!

For Immediate Release to the Media

UPDATE-UPDATE-UPDATE

It is with such deep and profound sadness that we share the news that former Sheriff William E. Hilton was the victim in today’s hit and run in Hineston. The facts of the incident are still under investigation.

We are also devastated in reporting Sheriff Hilton has passed away from those traumatic injuries he sustained in this horrible and senseless event.

Sheriff Hiltons leadership, dedication, and service to our community have left a lasting impact, and we know this loss will be felt by many parish, state and even country wide.

Please keep his family, friends and the RPSO Family in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this difficult time together.

We will share additional information as it becomes available.
———————————
Just before 1PM, Sheriff’s Dispatch received a report of a hit and run in the Hineston area where the suspect intentionally fled the scene.

Upon deputies arrival, the victim was found with severe physical injuries and was later transported by Pafford Ambulance to a local hospital. Status of the victim is unknown at this time.

Deputies quickly obtained a suspect vehicle description which was a blue Nissan Moreno and put it out to all local law enforcement

Deputies along with troopers from LSP spotted the vehicle on LA 28 at Leavines Road traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed.

Deputies and Troopers attempted to make a traffic stop but the suspect accelerated and ran from law enforcement which initiated a pursuit.

The suspect continued eastbound hitting speeds of well over 100 mph. A decision was made to spike the suspects tires which was effective and the suspect came to a stop at LA 28 and Cloverleaf Blvd where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

As this is still on ongoing and complex investigation, no further information will be given until a later time.
