Chair N. Scott Phillips on Maryland’s redistricting amendment: I voted to place the Maryland redistricting amendment (House Bill 2100) before the people of Maryland not because we were drawing congressional district maps or deciding who wins or loses an election. We voted to allow the people of Maryland to answer a constitutional question because, in a democracy, there is no higher authority than the people themselves.

“The filing of a federal lawsuit challenging Maryland’s Community Trust Act begins a legal process that should be resolved by our courts. Out of respect for that process, I will not comment on the legal arguments presented by either side. I remain confident that the Attorney General’s Office will vigorously defend the laws enacted by the Maryland General Assembly.”
