Build your own Crankie Theatre!

Discover the magic of screen-free storytelling with a crankie - a traditional, hand-cranked scrolling theater box that brings illustrated stories to life! In this imaginative, hands-on workshop, participants will create their own crankie theatre from start to finish. They’ll design and draw a story on a long paper scroll, build a simple crankie box, and experiment with ways to animate their narrative using spoken words, music, or whatever soundscapes come to mind. With endless possibilities for creativity, this workshop blends visual art, theater, storytelling and music in a unique format that celebrates the charm of the pre-digital era.

West Asheville Library is hosting this workshop for kids on Friday, September 25th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. ⚠️Registration is required! ⚠️ Registration closes at 12pm on September 23rd. This project is suitable for 3rd grade and up.

Join us for an educational program with the North Carolina Arboretum to learn all about the many different types of arachnids that call Western North Carolina their home! Ever wondered just what exactly makes an arachnid an arachnid? Are they all spiders? Do they all spin webs? Do they all have 8 legs? We'll answer these questions and more at this fun program!

Come ready to hear all about ecoEXPLORE, the many different types of arachnids (there ARE more than just Spiders!), where they live, what they eat, plus much more!

How to fold a one-page zine!

Are you a local zinester? We hope to see you at Asheville Zine Fest on September 26! Buncombe County Libraries will have a table with WAVL's zine box, information about Special Collection's zines, and a button maker with Pack Juv.

Zinefest will be from 12 to 5 on September 26, at Battery Park Hall. This event is free to attend and family friendly!

September 15th is National Voter Registration Day 🗳

The library is your one-stop-shop in preparation for Election Day! We can help you check your registration online to to ensure your information is updated and correct. We also have paper Voter Registration forms at the desk, and from Sept. 14th through the 19th, you can drop them off at the library to be returned to Election Services. Starting October 15th, we will be an Early Voting location!

September is also Library Card Sign-Up Month! All you need is your picture ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID) and proof of residence in Buncombe County (a piece of mail, a bill, a lease, even something digital).

Take advantage of your inalienable rights! Come visit us at the library!
