From building raised garden beds to planting the very first seeds, students at Hawthorn Academy in South Jordan, Utah got their hands dirty in the best way possible!

On May 6, Cox Automotive partnered with Captain Planet Foundation to bring hands-on environmental education to life through our Project Learning Garden program. Together with volunteers, students built five raised garden beds that will now serve as living classrooms where they can explore food systems, healthy choices, and sustainability firsthand.

Thanks to the support of Cox and Hawthorn Academy’s STEM leadership, students not only planted seeds and starter plants, but also connected with community leaders, educators, and changemakers who are helping grow the next generation of environmental stewards.

Even more exciting, Cox sponsored 10 additional Utah schools with garden bed kits and Project Learning Garden supplies, helping expand access to hands-on learning across the state.

A huge thank you to the Cox Automotive volunteers, Hawthorn Academy, South Jordan City Council Leader Kathy Johnson, Lynn Reichert from the Utah STEM Action Center, Dr. Floyd Stensrud, Marty Ordman, Max Koptik, Lisa Aloisio, Joy Leavitt, and everyone who made this day possible.

We can’t wait to see what these students grow this year!

Ted Turner and the Birth of Modern African Broadcast Freedom

”You cannot change Africa selling bottled cola water, you must use information, Edward.”

Those were the intimate but powerful words Ted Turner shared with me which convinced me to join CNN in early 1992.

At the time, almost every African country had only one state-controlled broadcaster and news was heavily censored.

Governments largely controlled the flow of information and citizens had very few alternative voices.

Through CNN, we helped break that chain. Africans suddenly saw live global news, open debate, hard questioning and journalism that challenged authority. State broadcasters slowly became more public-focused, while across the continent many entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to step into the media space and build independent radio and television networks.

Much of the media freedom and broadcast diversity Africa enjoys today can be traced to Ted’s bold vision. From Cairo to Cape Town, Dakar to Nairobi, CNN became the benchmark and inspired a generation of African journalists and media owners.

Ted Turner did not just build a television network; he transformed global communication which also gave Africa a stronger voice on the world stage. For many of us privileged to work directly with him, his vision was life-changing. His legacy will continue to live on wherever journalism is used to empower people and expand freedom.

Wrapping up Earth Month on a high note 🌎

On Earth Day, our CEO, Leesa Carter-Jones, had a conversation about empowering the next generation of environmental leaders and the impact of our programs across communities.

Happy Earth Day from Captain Planet Foundation! 🌎

Team Planet celebrated Earth by visiting Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Atlanta, GA, where students took part in a hands-on soil pH testing activity to help ensure their school garden has the nutrients it needs to thrive.

This garden at was one of the very first school gardens funded by CPF’s Project Learning Garden back in 2013, making today’s visit even more special!

A big thank you to MLK Middle for welcoming us and helping make Earth Day such a meaningful and educational celebration!

On March 18, 2026, nearly 100 Miami-Dade students filled the Betty T. Ferguson Auditorium as finalists in Miami’s first-ever Green Heart STEM Challenge.

After months of hard work, they took the stage to pitch solutions to real challenges in their communities, tackling issues within the EARTH element, such as coastal erosion, food access, and soil health. Huge congratulations to our winners, and to every finalist and educator who made it to this moment.

Thank you to Accenture, City of Miami Gardens, Delta Air Lines, Publix Super Markets Charities, Susan J. Klein, Whole Foods Market, and our partner, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), for helping make this event possible.

Wow - what a year! We’re so proud to share Captain Planet Foundation’s 2025 Annual Report!

In a year focused on the WIND element — our call to youth to design solutions in the circular economy — we engaged more than 40,000 young people worldwide across our programs.

Highlights include:
- 47 elementary schools joined Project Learning Garden, becoming a part of more than 780 school gardens across the U.S.

- 22 youth-led global WIND Summits convened more than 1,300 youth across 11 countries to activate campaigns on single-use plastics, electronic waste, fast fashion, and food waste

- 1,000+ middle schoolers in Atlanta and Houston designed WIND solutions in their communities through the Green Heart STEM Challenge, with three teams receiving implementation grants for their winning ideas

Leadership!

Colombia announced a groundbreaking policy declaring its entire Amazon biome a reserve zone for renewable natural resources.

This effectively bans approval of any new oil exploration, hydrocarbon production, or large-scale mining projects across the region.

The protected area spans approximately 483,000 square kilometers—equivalent to the size of Sweden—and accounts for about 42% of Colombia's continental territory, representing roughly 7% of the entire Amazon rainforest basin.

The decision, highlighted during COP30 in Brazil, positions Colombia as the first Amazonian nation to safeguard its full share of the forest from new extractive industrial activities.

It halts progress on dozens of pending concessions, including 43 oil blocks and hundreds of mining requests that had not yet begun operations.

By prioritizing ecosystem preservation over fossil fuel and mineral exploitation, the measure aims to curb deforestation, protect unparalleled biodiversity, and maintain the rainforest's critical role in global climate regulation through carbon storage and water cycle stability.

This bold step under the Petro administration reflects a shift toward sustainable development and sets a potential precedent for other Amazon countries facing similar pressures from resource extraction.

Environmental advocates hail it as one of the most significant conservation victories in recent history, safeguarding irreplaceable habitats and indigenous territories for future generations while contributing to planetary efforts against climate change.

The first new PLG garden of the 2026 calendar year was installed and celebrated last week, funded by the generosity of Bashas’/Food City markets!🎉🪴

The lively garden crew at Concordia Charter School in Mesa, AZ hosted this celebratory event with engaged representatives from Bashas’ Markets/Food City, as well as dedicated members of the Captain Planet Foundation team guiding over 80 students to install their garden and plant starter plants, which will be harvested before the end of the 2025/2026 school year. 🌼
