Washington Street SB will be closed at Miami for several hours this morning. A detour is in place - please follow all detour signage. Motorists should avoid the area if possible.**

Earlier this morning, the Auburn Fire Department and Unitil responded to a natural gas leak on Alpha Street. Surrounding properties were evacuated as a precaution. The leak is under control and all who were evacuated can now safely return to their properties.

The Auburn Fire Department’s Live Fire Training Building — constructed in the 1980s by dedicated (now retired) firefighters and community volunteers — is approaching its final days of service. This facility, which has been upgraded many times over the years, has played a vital role in training firefighters from Auburn, Androscoggin County, and across Maine.

A new state‑of‑the‑art Live Fire Training Facility will soon rise on the same property, ensuring that future generations of firefighters have the tools and environment they need to learn, grow, and stay safe.

While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to a building that has shaped so many careers, this moment also represents tremendous progress.

We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to this training building from its earliest days through today. Their vision and hard work laid the foundation for the next era of firefighter training in our city and our state.

Today, that future is already taking shape — as the Auburn and Lewiston Fire Departments train together on roof‑ventilation evolutions, continuing the legacy of collaboration, skill‑building, and service to our community. 🔥

The Auburn Fire and Police Departments were called to the area of 325 Court Street on July 23, 2026, at 01:24AM for a reported fire. The first Auburn Fire units were on scene at 01:28AM, reporting a working structure fire on the rear exterior of the structure at 325 Court Street. Auburn Fire units extinguished the exterior fire, but the fire had extended to the attic area of the building. Crews got the fire under control in about 40 minutes from the time of call.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire, and no emergency response staff were injured to the incident.

Auburn Fire was assisted on scene by the Lewiston Fire Department and the communities of Mechanic Falls, New Gloucester, and Durham provided station coverage during the incident. Additionally on scene Auburn Fire was assisted by the Auburn Police Department, CMP and Unitil Gas Company.

The cause of the is undetermined at this time while the Maine Fire Marshals Office with the assistance of the Auburn Police Department complete the investigation.

On July 15, 2026, at 14:22, the Auburn Fire Department responded to 1030 North River Road in Auburn for a reported barn fire. Shortly after the initial dispatch, the Auburn Police Department arrived and confirmed a fully involved barn fire.

Auburn Fire Department units reached the scene at 14:27. Due to the extent of the fire, crews took defensive actions and immediately focused on protecting a nearby exposure – a barn housing approximately 50 cattle. Because the incident occurred in an area without hydrant coverage, Auburn Fire, along with multiple mutual aid partners, established a water shuttle operation using a hydrant on Stetson Road.

The fire proved particularly challenging due to the large number of round hay bales—about 500—contained within the barn. Crews remained on scene for more than six hours to extinguish the majority of the fire, and Auburn Fire personnel stayed through the night to monitor conditions and contain hot spots.

Mutual aid support from Turner, Poland, Minot, Pownal, Hebron, Greene, Durham, New Gloucester, and Lewiston Fire was vital to the successful containment of the incident. Additionally, the Auburn Public Works Team provided essential assistance, using equipment to safely move burning hay.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Lewiston-Auburn 911 Communications Center. As always, their skilled and professional dispatching was instrumental in ensuring a coordinated, timely, and effective emergency response.

Auburn Fire and Public Works crews returned to the scene today for several hours to extinguish additional hot spots, supported once again by our mutual aid partners at the Minot Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, and all cattle on the property remained unharmed.

As we gather to celebrate Independence Day, the Auburn Fire Department wants everyone to enjoy a safe, memorable holiday. Please take a moment to review these important safety reminders:

• Personal fireworks are prohibited in the City of Auburn. Local ordinance bans the sale, possession, and use of consumer fireworks within city limits. Even small items can spark fires or cause serious injuries in seconds. Please help keep our neighborhoods safe by respecting the ban.

• Fireworks carry a high risk of injury and fire. Each year, thousands of people—many of them children and teens—are injured by fireworks, and fires sparked by misuse cause significant property damage nationwide. Even sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures and can ignite clothing or nearby materials.

• Leave the fireworks to the professionals. This is the safest way to enjoy the holiday. The Liberty Festival's public display offers a spectacular and safe way to celebrate without risking injury or fire.

• Celebrate safely and be fire‑aware. If you see discarded fireworks or unsafe behavior, please keep your distance and contact the appropriate non‑emergency number. Always keep common‑sense fire safety in mind—clear dry debris from around grills, keep water sources nearby, and stay alert.

Recently, the Auburn Fire Department’s Training Division completed its annual Confined Space training with all four shifts, joined by our friends from the Poland Fire Rescue Department. This year’s scenario was designed not only to refresh critical skills, but also to reflect a real emergency that occurred more than 20 years ago.

In that past incident, a local concrete company employee was performing maintenance inside a cement truck when a large piece of concrete scale fell, causing significant injuries. Fire personnel entered the confined space to provide lifesaving care and to develop a safe system to extricate the worker from the truck. The challenges faced that day — and the knowledge gained from them — continue to shape our approach to these high‑risk, low‑frequency emergencies.

Using lessons learned from the original incident, along with modern equipment and updated techniques, the Training Division developed a realistic, hands‑on scenario for this year’s training evolutions. These exercises help ensure that our crews are fully prepared for the complex situations they may encounter at any time in our community.

The Auburn and Poland Fire Departments extend our sincere thanks to Auburn Concrete for their support in developing and hosting this year’s training. Their partnership helps us maintain readiness and safeguard our communities.

🦆 There’s more AFD wildlife rescue to report! FF Dailey, Capt. Carver, and FF Warner channeled their inner “duck-tectives” this week, springing into action to save some curious ducklings who took an unexpected slide into the storm drain at Stable Ridge Apartments. With teamwork, quick thinking, and a splash of feathered finesse, the crew safely scooped the little wanderers back to safety.

A huge shout-out to Mike Farr at Dag's Bait & Sport Goods for lending the perfect net to help wrangle the tiny web-footed escape artists.

Just another day making sure every resident—feathered or otherwise—stays safe and sound.
