On April 16, 1947, the cargo ship Grandcamp caught fire in Texas City harbor. Its hold contained 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. The explosion that followed killed 581 people, injured 5,000, destroyed the entire waterfront, and was felt in Louisiana. A second ship exploded the following morning. The entire Texas City volunteer fire department was killed in the first explosion. It remains the deadliest industrial accident in United States history and most Americans have never heard of it. 🔥
