Lums Pond State Park

Lums Pond State Park 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701 www.destateparks.com (302) 368-6989 Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware.

The park features excellent fishing, sports facilities, hiking trails and more on its 1790 acres on the north side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Lums Pond itself covers 200 acres, and although there is no swimming allowed, boat rentals and fishing provide water-bound recreation in the summer months. A boat launching ramp and two piers allow easy access to the water. Before the pond existed

, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800's when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill. This area was first used as a state park in 1963.

Lums Pond hosted their Spring Festival on this day 47 years ago, celebrating the opening of newly built recreation facilities! Lums was just becoming the park we know today having only been used as a state park since 1963. Join us in continuing that celebration from 5-7:30p.m. tonight. This free event will include fishing and dip-netting down by the pond, kids crafts, and giveaways! 🎣
Meet at the nature center in Area 5 where we will have extended hours for the event and it will be open with a special display of historical photos of the park and old news articles. We encourage guests to bring your own park photos and stories to share!

The Lums Pond team has been very busy this winter and spring prepping for the start of summer! ☀
January and February brought us some of the biggest snowfalls in several years but nothing too tough for our team to handle. 🌨️
While the snow laid there for weeks upon weeks our maintenance team began prepping for spring. Mowers, tractors, small engine equipment, you name it! They were performing preventative maintenance and repairs to be ready to roll when it was time.
Once the snow FINALLY melted, they were back out there working on removing invasives, cutting back trails, cleaning up debris from storms and eventually starting to mow grass. The smell of cut grass has never smelled sweeter after the winter we had!🌾
Thank you maintenance team for all that you do!
