It is with great sadness, the Northwest St. Clair County Fire Protection District announces the passing of retired firefighter Elmer Neff. Elmer Neff joined in 1970, at the time it was called Northwest Volunteer Fire Dept. Elmer was essential in the merger of the all the districts that now make up the Northwest Fire Protection District. Elmer retired in 1991 from the Northwest Fire Protection District. Though he retired, Elmer continued to stay active with the fire district and the fire association. Thank you for all your years of service to the fire district and the association. You will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.

At 1931 this evening, the Northwest Fire District responded to the intersection of State Route 15 and South 11th St for a vehicle accident with multiple injuries. Units arrived on scene to find a multi-vehicle accident with multiple injuries. After determining there was more injuries than resources on scene, the scene was declared an MCI or Mass Casualty Incident. Once the MCI was declared, additional EMS resources were requested to the scene to assist with the injured patients. Multiple patients were transported to local hospitals and one transported across the river to a pediatric hospital as a precaution. Units remained on scene to assist Illinois State Police and provide blockage while patients were evaluated.

We would like to thank Medstar EMS and the mutual aid EMS agencies that assisted.

We would also like to thank Signal Hill Fire Dept for standing by in quarters while units operated at the accident.

Today, members of the Northwest Fire District participated in a touch-a-truck event at the Belle Clair Fair Grounds. Visitors got to see ladder 4229, all the equipment it carries, meet the firefighters, and talk about fire prevention. Throughout the weekend, multiple other fire departments will be at the fair so stop by and say hi!

One family stopped by and took advantage of a great photo opportunity. With permission from the family, we were allowed to post their photo.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July.

The Northwest Fire District responded to 2 emergencies yesterday.

At 13:20, units were requested to assist Fairview Heights FD with a residential structure fire. Chief 4200 and engine 4213 responded to the scene and assisted with overhaul and cleanup. Northwest Fire units were on scene with other mutual aid departments for just under 2 hours before returning to service. As always, mutual aid played an essential and important roll as temperatures were over 90+ degrees with humidity. Multiple departments on scene allowed crews to rotate through rehab. Thank you to Medstar EMS for providing medical coverage on scene.

Just before 1700, Northwest fire units were dispatched for a tree entangled in power lines from the storms that was coming through the area. Chief 4200 and engine 4213 responded to the scene. Units arrived on scene to determine that there was no hazards to the public. Ameren electric was contacted and requested to the scene. Northwest Fire units returned to service.

As we approach this holiday weekend, we want to start by saying we hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July.

As always, please be careful and use caution with fire works. Fire works should only be handled by professionals or adults. Fire works can burn up to 1000 degrees.

Due to the recent heat, natural vegetation has become very dry making it easy for grass or brush to catch fire. Always have a means of extinguishment such as a garden hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher.

Lastly, allow fire works to cool before placing them in a trash can. Best practice is to place all used fire works in a bucket of water and to let them soak over night.
