Old North Church & Historic Site Old North Church is an icon of the American Revolution and the oldest church building in Boston. John Pulling, Jr.

The enduring fame of Old North Church began on the evening of April 18, 1775, when the church sexton, Robert Newman, and vestryman Capt. climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution.

According to legend, Old North’s sexton Robert Newman escaped British patrols through this window after displaying the signal lanterns in the steeple on the night of Paul Revere’s ride. You can still see the intact glass window when you tour the church’s sanctuary!

In 1815, Old North opened the Christ Church Sunday School, which was reportedly the first of its kind in the United States.

Children of all religious backgrounds attended and learned how to read and write in addition to receiving religious instruction. The school building is to the left of the church in this drawing.

George Collamore was a congregant at Old North Church and an abolitionist. In 1856, he moved his family to Kansas, and in the years that followed, he risked everything for a cause he believed in.
