West Nile Virus Update! (7 New)

Please eliminate mosquito sources in yard. (See picture for info)

The Box Elder Mosquito Abatement District has been informed by the Utah State Public Health Laboratory that seven new mosquito pools (samples) tested positive for West Nile Virus in Box Elder County. The District has now had positive pools from traps located near the following locations :
- Rocket Road and 9200 in Tremonton (2)
- 1600 N and 5600 W in Corinne (2)
- 2400 W and 3000 N in Brigham (2)
- 4800 W and 6100 N in Bear River (2)
- 1000 W and 100 S in Brigham
- Public shooting grounds W of Little Mountain
- 11600 W and 8000 N in Penrose

We have now had 11 positive mosquito pools from the county this season. WNV has only been confirmed in these traps, but it is very likely that the virus is present throughout the county.

Please take proper precautions if you are outside after dusk. Be sure to wear long sleeve shirts and pants. Mosquito Repellent with DEET or Picaridin is also a great way to avoid mosquito bites.
Please follow us on our page to stay updated on the WNV activity in the county. We invite everyone to share this with friends and family to help keep them safe as well.

West Nile Virus Alert!

The Box Elder Mosquito Abatement District has been informed by the Utah State Public Health Laboratory that two mosquito pools (samples) tested positive for West Nile Virus in Box Elder County. The District collected these pools from two different trap locations. The first one was from Bear River City and the other was from West Corinne. These are the first positive mosquito pools from the county this season.

West Nile Virus Alert!
- First Human Case

The District was alerted yesterday afternoon that a citizen from Brigham City tested positive for WNV this week. This is the first confirmed human case in Box Elder County this year. This case is the earliest confirmed human West Nile Virus case in Box Elder County history. We believe that an abnormally warm winter has contributed to an earlier start to the WNV season. The District has been testing but has not had WNV confirmed in any mosquito pools (samples) that have been sent in.

Holiday activities will be more common over the next couple of months, Please take proper precautions if you are outside after dusk. Be sure to wear long sleeve shirts and pants. Mosquito Repellent with DEET or Picaridin is also a great way to avoid mosquito bites.

Our day time technicians have been working hard to treat the mosquito larvae before they hatch off as adults, but a small percentage will still likely make it to the adult stage. This small percentage can still accumulate to large adult mosquito populations. Please do what you can to eliminate the cryptic sources on your property. We have attached a picture to give you ideas of manmade containers that have been known to collect rain and sprinkler water.

Please follow us on our page to stay updated on the WNV activity in the county. We invite everyone to share this with friends and family to help keep them safe as well.

With a mild winter and record-breaking temperatures in March, adult mosquitoes are coming out of hibernation in larger than normal numbers and aggressively seeking blood meals to continue their life cycle. This population of adult mosquitoes will normally subside within a couple of weeks. The Box Elder Mosquito Abatement District is aware of the issue and has started fogging as much as possible when evening and nighttime temperatures allow.

To request to have your neighborhood fogged, please call (435)723-3700 and leave a message. The district follows up on every call received. With any other questions, call the same number and ask for Tyson.
