Please join Sunset Park 54th Street neighbors for our 54th Street MURAL COMMUNITY PAINT DAY (during our 54th street block party) on Saturday August 1st between 12:00-3:00PM at 54th street and 5th Avenue (Citibank building).

All ages can join us to paint! Wear clothes that can get dirty (paint!) on them. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event. RSVP is not required.

The 54th street mural celebrates the vibrancy, diversity and multicultural identity of the Sunset Park community. It features two women dancing, a common sight in the park and during the parades hosted on Sunset Park’s 5th Avenue. They are surrounded by flowers from across Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. A Brownstone facade, the St. Michael’s steeple and the view from the park were included as a testament to the decades-long effort for landmarking to preserve the neighborhood’s historical architecture, viewpoints and connection to the working waterfront.



A dedicated group of Sunset Park and 54th Street neighbors, with the support of the Sunset Park Business Improvement District (BID), organized the new mural, which continues a legacy of mural painting on this wall since the late 1970s. The design for the new mural was developed over a year. Neighbors participated in design sessions, door-to-door canvassing, surveys, and community gatherings. More than 100 residents on the block overwhelmingly voted to select Brooklyn-born artist Danielle Mastrion to design and paint the mural.

Know where you will go if your home begins to flood, whether that’s a neighbor’s apartment on a higher floor, a nearby public building or the home of a friend or family member. * Prepare a Go Bag with medications, a flashlight, batteries, a portable phone charger, important documents in waterproof bags and other essentials. 
* During high winds, stay indoors whenever possible, avoid downed power lines and trees and secure outdoor furniture, trash bins and other loose items. 
* Call 911 if you are in immediate danger or trapped by rising water.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) today urged New Yorkers to prepare for waves of heavy rain expected Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Ahead of potential life-threatening flash flooding overnight, the City is opening 51 safe overnight locations at New York City Public Schools across the five boroughs. The locations will open at 8 p.m. Tuesday and remain available while dangerous conditions persist. New Yorkers can find the nearest safe overnight location by calling 311 or visiting http://on.nyc.gov/SafeLocations

TORNADO WATCH & SEVERE THUNDERSTORM RISK
4:00 PM – 12:00 AM, Tuesday, July 21st

A Tornado Watch is in effect for portions of the NYC area. A line of strong thunderstorms is expected to move through the region this evening and may bring:

Damaging wind gusts

Heavy rain and locally intense downpours

Frequent lightning

Isolated tornadoes

Localized street flooding and scattered power outages

Stay indoors during the strongest storms, secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and seek shelter immediately if a Tornado Warning is issued.

Severe flooding is expected today and tomorrow. New Yorkers are advised to stay indoors unless experiencing flooding or an evacuation order. Call 911 if you are in danger and report clogged catch basins to 311.

NYC Emergency Management advises New Yorkers to prepare for potential rain 7/18 - 7/19. The National Weather Service has forecast possible brief periods of rainfall rates of .75-2 inches an hour. New Yorkers living in basement apartments should be prepared to move to higher ground or a higher floor during periods of heavy rain. Heavy rain may cause rapid flooding of basements with little to no notice and can be life-threatening. Stay OUT of flooded basements under all circumstances.

Heavy rain may create dangerous travel conditions:

Limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.

If you must travel, exercise caution. Do not drive vehicles or walk into areas where water covers the roadway, as the water depth may be too great to allow you to cross safely.

If you are outside during a thunderstorm, avoid open areas and seek shelter indoors.

You can report a problem with a catch basin. Catch basins, commonly referred to as storm drains or sewer grates, are located on street and highway curbs. They collect storm water.

⚠️ Air Quality Advisory: Smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to push AQI to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups levels (101–150) in NYC today, Wednesday.

Children, older adults, those who are pregnant & those with medical conditions should limit time outdoors, remain in a cool space, and consider wearing a KN95 or N95 mask if they must be outside.

🩺 Know the warning signs: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness or pain, and unusual fatigue. If symptoms are severe — especially difficulty breathing or chest pain — seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
