The countdown is on! Vetoberfest is just 5 days away!

Join Hernando County Veteran Services on Saturday, October 3rd, for the Hernando Heroes Fair, Vetoberfest: a family-friendly celebration honoring our veterans, first responders, and the community that supports them.

With 70+ vendors, live entertainment, food trucks, a kids play zone, a wrestling event, car show, and local veteran resources, there will be plenty to see, do, and enjoy throughout the day.

This event is made possible through the dedication of so many people in our community, including the Vet Fest Hernando County team, whose continued work supporting veterans and military families has helped bring Vetoberfest to life.

Whether you served, wear the uniform today, have a hero in your family, or simply want to come out and show your support, we’d love to see you there!

Hernando County does not currently have any confirmed cases of Dengue Fever. Residents can help prevent mosquito-borne illnesses by taking a few simple precautions:

• Use insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
• Wear long pants, socks and shirts when in areas with mosquitoes.
• Drain standing water around your home to help prevent mosquito breeding.

🦟 A quick reminder: Don’t let mosquitos bug you!
Keep the 5 D’s in mind to help protect yourself and your family:

👕 DRESS: Wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
🌅 DAWN & DUSK: Mosquitoes are most active around these times, so limit outdoor activity when possible.
💧 DRAIN: Dump and drain standing water around your home to prevent mosquito breeding.
🦟 DEET: Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent to help protect against bites.

The Hernando County Main Landfill recently completed a Waste Composition Study to find out exactly what’s being thrown away.

Here’s how it worked:
🚛 32 garbage trucks were selected for the study.
⚖️ 200 pounds of garbage was pulled from each truck.
🔎 Then, the garbage was carefully sorted into 40 different categories, including materials that could potentially be recycled, reused or diverted from the landfill.

So, why dig through all that trash?
Because knowing what’s in our waste helps us plan for the future. The information collected can help guide landfill planning, disposal needs, recycling efforts and other waste management decisions.

The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) proclaimed September 15 through October 15, 2026, as Hispanic Heritage Month at a regular BOCC meeting on September 22, 2026.

Hispanic Americans have helped shape the United States as a place of freedom and opportunity. Their contributions as leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and members of the Armed Forces continue to enrich the character of the United States of America.

The BOCC encourages all citizens to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month by participating in appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs that celebrate the contributions and heritage of Hispanic Americans.

Hernando County Mosquito Control responds to resident service requests FREE of charge. When you report a problem, mosquito control technicians can inspect your property, identify potential breeding areas, and determine the appropriate treatment.
Remember, mosquitoes can breed in as little as ¼ teaspoon of water, so check your property regularly for standing water, too!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the UF IFAS Extension Hernando County Annual Coastal Cleanup on September 19! Over 175 volunteers spread out across Hernando County’s coastal areas to make a BIG impact. Together, you collected more than 3,000 pounds of trash from our coastal areas!

Some volunteers joined us for the very first time, while others have made this cleanup an annual tradition. Families, friends, and community members of all ages gave their time, energy and heart to our community. Whether you picked up one piece of trash or filled a whole bag, you made a difference. 🌊

At the September 22, 2026, Hernando County Board of County Commissioners meeting, current State Representative Jeff Holcomb and former Hernando County Commissioner Brian Hawkins welcomed Veterans of Brigade 2506 to recognize the 65th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Operation and honor the members of Assault Brigade 2506.

Among the guests were Dr. Zayas-Bazán, who served as a frogman with the underwater demolition team during the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and Carlos Leon, a paratrooper who was among the youngest members of the Brigade to see combat.

The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners was honored to recognize these Veterans from Miami and commemorate their courage, sacrifice and extraordinary place in history.
