Happy Labor Day! Today we celebrate the hard work and dedication of Mainers across our state. As you enjoy time with family and friends, we encourage you to do so safely whether you’re traveling, doing a cookout, or spending time outdoors.

It's also Preparedness Month! Throughout September, MEMA will be sharing simple steps and resources to help you and your loved ones be ready for emergencies. Preparedness starts with small actions and together, we can build a ready and resilient Maine.

We will be conducting training this evening at several locations. If you see emergency vehicles, responders & commotion at the following locations early this evening, don’t be alarmed, we are just training to keep our skills sharp & be prepared to assist you .

We will be operating in Brownville Village on Church St. by the river & bridge.

We will also be operating in the Junction on Davis St, near the Pine Tree Cemetery.

Congratulations, Cougar All of the hard work, long hours, and dedication you’ve put into getting to this point has paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of you.

Cougar will take his written exam next month, which is the final step in completing the process and earning his Pro Board Firefighter I & II certification.

🚨 August is here!

😳 ? 62% of home fire deaths occurred in homes without working smoke alarms or with alarms that weren't properly maintained.

A working smoke alarm isn't optional—it's often the difference between waking up and not waking up.

If you haven't tested yours yet, there's still time! It only takes a few minutes, and those few minutes could save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

✅ Test your smoke alarms monthly.
✅ Replace batteries as needed (if applicable).
✅ Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.

On Thursday evening Brownville Fire Rescue was dispatched to a water rescue on Schoodic Lake in the area off Knights Landing.

Responding units were updated that there were individuals in the water aprox 1/2 mile off shore. They were also advised that there were several Good Samaritan’s on boats that were en route to assist.

Upon arrival at the boat ramp we were pleased to learn that three individuals had been rescued & brought to shore by the assisting good samaritans.

Two individuals were evaluated by BFD EMS personnel on scene for exposure after being in the water for a period of time. After warming up, both individuals decided not to seek additional medical treatment at the hospital.

It was determined that a small boat had experienced a mechanical issue while on the lake and after a period of time several of the occupants attempted to swim to shore for assistance. We were pleased to learn they had life jackets on.

Thanks to the actions of local good samaritans this event had a very positive outcome and everyone went home safe. Not only did they assist the swimmers in the water, they also towed the disabled boat to shore. Although we are confident that any one of our readers would have assisted, it was ironic that the good samaritans were retired & active duty firefighters from other communities who have homes on Schoodic Lake.

We would also like to thank the following agencies for assisting us on scene: Piscataquis County Sheriffs Office & The Maine Game Wardens Service.
