I'm very proud to have served as House Chair on the conference committee that reached this compromise agreement on the Early Literacy. I'm grateful to Speaker Ron Mariano, State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, and their staff for their support and for making early literacy a priority this session.

Thank you as well to Leader Alice Peisch, State Representative Simon Cataldo and State Representative Dan Sena, the House and Senate conference committee members, and State Senator Sal DiDomenico and his staff for their partnership and contributions throughout this process.

This legislation will ban the use of three-cueing, an instructional method that hinders young students' ability to learn how to read by replacing the focus from the letters of a word to guessing a word based on pictures and context clues. Instead, school districts will be required to use evidence-based literacy curriculum in grades K-3 that emphasize phonics, teaching students to connect letters and sounds and develop strong reading skills.

Check out the graphic below for more highlights of the compromise bill.

Today the House and Senate reached an agreement on legislation that will strengthen early literacy instruction in the Commonwealth. I am grateful for the hard work and collaboration of my House conferees, State Representative Simon Cataldo, State Representative John Marsi, and Senate conferees Co-Chair Senator Sal DiDomenico, Senator Jason Lewis, and Senator Patrick O'Connor.

This legislation will help ensure that students are taught to read using evidence-based curriculum and instruction, giving them the tools they need to thrive.

Congratulations to Burlington high schoolers Eiko Coram and Meghna Dinesh on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. Eiko wrote, illustrated, and self-published a children's book raising awareness about deforestation and inspiring a deeper connection with nature. Meghna collaborated with Model United Nations on a project empowering young women to pursue opportunities in foreign policy and international affairs. I am proud to recognize their leadership, creativity, and commitment to service, and honored to present them with citations at their ceremony.
