It's time to take a stand against the federal government's harmful proposal to weaken Head Start programs. Head Start is a federal program that supports our children's access to preschool and early education. As House chair of the Joint Committee on Education, I proudly stood with with Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Congresswoman Katherine Clark, Secretary Stephen Zrike, and my colleagues in the Legislature Representatives Steven Ultrino, Kate Lipper-Garabedian, and Paul Donato in opposing any proposed cuts to the program. We know what’s at stake and we won’t stand by while these critical programs are put at risk.

Great visit to the Literacy Launch Institute this morning in Medford! These institutes train educators with free, high-quality, evidence-based early literacy instruction. Their work will be instrumental in implementing our newly passed early literacy law, helping ensure every student builds strong reading skills through evidence-based, phonics-focused instruction.

Thank you to Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, HILL for Literacy, RMC Research Corporation, the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy, and the Center for Teacher Education and Research at Westfield State University for hosting.

More from yesterday's early literacy bill signing!

06/26/2026

Our early literacy bill is now law! I am proud to have served as House Chair of the conference committee that led to a compromise placed on the Governor's desk today. Every student in Massachusetts will now be taught to read using evidence-based, phonics-focused instruction giving children the strong literacy foundation they deserve. This new law also supports our educators by ensuring they receive the training needed to help every young reader succeed.
