Today marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which extends through November 30. The National Hurricane Center and NOAA outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season predicts a below-normal season, but it only takes one storm making landfall to have significant impacts. Some skills are worth knowing, no matter where life takes you — even out to sea!

This week, Castine Fire Rescue Department (CFRD) AEMT Brock Taylor led a Stop the Bleed session for Maine Maritime Academy and Texas A&M cadets aboard their joint training cruise. Stop the Bleed teaches everyday people how to control serious bleeding before help arrives — direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquets. In an emergency, the person standing next to you is often the one who makes the difference.

Brock was recently honored with the CFRD Safety Medal for his work advancing our Stop the Bleed program and teaching. The Safety Medal recognizes a commitment to the safety of fellow members, patients, and the public that goes well beyond the basics — including sustained leadership that strengthens how safely we operate and serve. Brock's teaching does exactly that.

We were also glad to welcome retired NASA astronaut Col. Mike Fossum (pictured here with Brock Taylor) to the session!

On Friday May 15th, the fire and explosion at the Robbins Mill changed the face of the fire service in Waldo County forever.

The repercussions of the loss of Morrill Firefighter Andrew Cross, along with the injuries sustained by members of the Searsmont Fire Dept, Searsmont EMS, Belmont Fire, Montville Fire, Lincolnville Fire and Appleton Fire Departments will be felt for years to come.
