James Cleland Gilchrist was UNI’s first chief administrator, his title was principal rather than president. He studied at Antioch College under Horace Mann and received an honorary M.A. degree from Allegheny College. He was hired as principal of UNI (then known as the Iowa State Normal School) in 1877 when the school had only one main building. Two building have been named for him, the first Gilchrist Hall burned down in 1972 and the second Gilchrist Hall was dedicated to him in 1975.
