An estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Working together across our networks, we can generate awareness and foster action to end elder abuse. Let’s work to keep everyone safe as we age. https://loom.ly/u88jfL0

Older adults face distinct health and wellness challenges. Our health and wellness programs are designed to support both you and your caregiver in improving your quality of life. One of the primary ways our Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) team engages with our network is through evidence-based workshops tailored to meet these needs.

Evidence-based programs are research-based courses that provide documented health benefits, so you can be confident they’ll work for you or your loved one. We offer five current evidence-based workshops:
- Living Healthy with Chronic Disease Self-Management
- Living Healthy with Diabetes Self-Management
- Living Healthy with Chronic Pain Self-Management
- Building Better Caregivers
- A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls

You can learn more about these programs here: https://loom.ly/5Fps9WY

This Mental Health Awareness Month we are reflecting on a previous program offered at Centralina Area Agency on Aging: PEARLS!

PEARLS stands for Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding Lives and is a brief evidence-based program focused on reducing depressive symptoms and improving overall well-being among older adults. Staff member Amanda Dawson states "The change participants experience from the beginning of the program to the end is impactful and so positive.”

Although the PEARLS program has concluded, Centralina Area Agency on Aging continues to provide education, resources and support related to social isolation, loneliness and mental health for older adults, caregivers and professionals.

You can read more about PEARLS here: https://loom.ly/KgQbKv0

Social isolation and loneliness are more than emotional challenges. They pose serious threats to both mental and physical health, especially for older adults. According to the CDC, older adults who experience isolation face a higher risk of depression, heart disease, and suicidal thoughts.
