Can you guess the diameter of this pipe, recently installed at one of our project sites?

The City of Charlotte completes hundreds of storm drainage improvement projects across the region each year to replace aging infrastructure and proactively reduce the risk of flooding. Storm drains use pipes of all sizes, like this big one, to move rainwater off our streets and into nearby streams and lakes.

Visit charlottenc.gov/Services/Stormwater/Projects to learn more about ongoing projects, and drop your guess about this pipe in the comments!

New here? Even if you've never heard of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, you've seen one of the 150,000 storm drains moving rainwater through your neighborhood!

When it rains, stormwater flows into these drains, travels through underground pipes and eventually enters our local waterways.

The next time you see a storm drain, remember: Our work is all around and underground!

True or False: The Storm Water Services Construction and Utilities team oversees hundreds of storm drainage improvement projects across Charlotte each year.

If you guessed true, you’re absolutely right! 🎉

These professionals work hard in the field year-round to ensure our public storm drainage infrastructure functions as it should, helping rainwater move safely and efficiently through our community. Their behind-the-scenes work plays a vital role in reducing flooding and protecting our streets and neighborhoods.

Fall may be just around the corner, but with temperatures still soaring across the region, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) may still appear in our waterways. HABs can occur when excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, enter waterways and fuel algal growth. Warm, sunny and slow moving water can create conditions that allow blooms to grow.

HABs aren’t the only type of pollution you may spot in creeks, ponds and lakes. Paint, chemicals, sediment and other pollutants can also make their way into our waterways.

If you spot what you think might be a HAB or another type of surface water pollution, you can report it by:
• Calling 311 (or 704-336-7600)
• Using the free CLT+ app
• Submitting a report at servicerequest.charlottenc.gov/service

Remember: When in doubt, stay out!
