Traffic Advisory – Downtown Railroad Crossings Blocked

The City of Kings Mountain has been notified that a Norfolk Southern train is still currently stopped and blocking the downtown railroad crossings due to mechanical issues.

Norfolk Southern has advised that crews are actively working to resolve the problem; however, there is currently no confirmed estimated time of repair or when the train will be back in service.

During this time, motorists traveling through the downtown area will need to utilize the King Street bridge as an alternate route. Please allow for additional travel time and use caution while navigating the detour.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as Norfolk Southern works to address this issue. The City will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

As we conclude our celebration of National Public Works Week, we are honored to highlight two final divisions whose work is essential to the functionality and sustainability of our community:

Stormwater and Building Maintenance.

Our Stormwater Division works tirelessly behind the scenes to protect our infrastructure and environment. This team:

-Collects leaves along 125.63 miles of roadway on a bi-weekly basis

-Operates street sweepers across 128.82 miles of City-maintained curbline and 122 miles of State-maintained curbline bi-weekly

-Maintains storm drainage systems—including pipes, ditches, gutters, and creeks—along more than 64.63 miles of City roadways

-Completed 9 major stormwater repairs in-house, improving efficiency and response time

-Mows creek banks and approximately 50 ditches to ensure proper water flow

-Conducts quarterly inspections of 200 catch basins and annual inspections of 31 outfalls

-Actively engages with the community by participating in annual events such as Beach Blast and Earth Day

Equally vital is the work of our Building Maintenance Division, which ensures City facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained. This team is responsible for 14 City-owned facilities, performing day-to-day repairs, completing minor construction projects, and coordinating outside contractors when needed. Their attention to detail and proactive approach keeps City operations running smoothly for both employees and the public.

Together, these divisions represent the backbone of our City’s infrastructure—protecting our environment, maintaining essential facilities, and supporting the services our residents rely on every day.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Stormwater and Building Maintenance teams for their hard work, expertise, and commitment to excellence in serving Kings Mountain.

As we continue celebrating National Public Works Week, we are happy to recognize two divisions whose work helps preserve the beauty, dignity, and care of our community:

Grounds Maintenance and our Cemetery Team.

Our Grounds Maintenance plays a vital role in maintaining the appearance and upkeep of City-owned properties. This team is responsible for 32 City-owned lots, providing consistent mowing, trimming, and mulching to ensure these spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike. Beyond the growing season, they also step in to support the City’s leaf collection program, demonstrating their flexibility and commitment year-round.

Equally important is the work of our Cemetery employees, whose responsibilities reflect both precision and compassion. This team maintains more than 15,000 grave sites and surrounding grounds, ensuring these spaces are treated with the utmost respect and care. They also perform the opening and closing of graves, serving families during some of life’s most difficult moments with professionalism and dignity.

Together, these divisions work diligently behind the scenes to maintain the spaces that matter most to our community.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Grounds Maintenance and Cemetery teams for their dedication, respect, and unwavering commitment to serving Kings Mountain.
