A nice day outside means another opportunity to sharpen skills. Today some of our Driver Operators and Driver Operator Trainees spent time completing pump operation check-offs. Understanding the science behind moving water from the engine to the firefighters on the nozzle requires focus and practice. From establishing water supplies to calculating friction loss, pump discharge pressure, and elevation changes, there's much more to pumping than turning a few valves. Every decision made at the pump directly affects the crews operating the hose line.

This afternoon, Engine 231 responded to a report of a gas leak in the 1600blk of Emerald Lake Dr.
after an underground natural gas line was accidentally struck by contractors working in the area. Upon arrival, crews confirmed the damaged gas line and, as a precaution, deployed a protection line while awaiting the arrival of Piedmont Natural Gas. Firefighters remained on scene until the leak was safely controlled.

A Friendly Safety Reminder
🚨⚠️🚨 When you encounter emergency vehicles operating in or along the roadway, please slow down, stay alert, and follow the directions of emergency personnel.
🚨⚠️🚨 Never drive over a fire hose. Driving over them can damage the hose, and create an unnecessary hazard for both responders and the public.

Your patience and cooperation help us operate safely and efficiently while serving our community.

🚧 Road Closed Means Road Closed 🚧

The barricades are there for your safety. While the rain may have stopped in some areas, the danger has not. Creeks, streams, and drainage systems continue to rise long after the rainfall ends, and with additional heavy rain expected overnight, conditions can quickly worsen.

Remember:
🌧️ Never drive through flooded roadways.
🚧 Never move or drive around barricades.
πŸš— Turn around and find another route.

It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle off the roadway, and the depth or condition of the road beneath the water is often impossible to see.

With temperatures soaring this summer, a parked vehicle can become dangerously hot in just minutes.
Recently, a great group helped us demonstrate just how extreme that heat can become. Using nothing more than the heat trapped inside a parked vehicle, we were able to make s’mores. This is a powerful reminder that if it's hot enough to melt chocolate and marshmallows, it's far too hot for anyone.

Help keep children safe by:
πŸš’ Never allowing children to play in or around parked vehicles.
πŸš’ Always lock your vehicle and keep keys or key fobs out of children's reach.
πŸš’ Check your back seat every time you park even if your routine hasn't changed.

S'mores belong around a campfire not inside a car. Just like no child should ever be left in a hot vehicle, s'mores should only be enjoyed the way they were meant to be. Together, we can help prevent tragedy through awareness, education, and a few simple habits that save lives.
