Our officers are conducting proactive community outreach to address the massive surge in electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) in our neighborhoods, driven by a dramatic increase in injuries and fatalities nationwide.
This local crisis mirrors a severe national spike; data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that micromobility fatalities jumped from just five in 2017 to 135 in 2024, while nationwide emergency room visits quadrupled from 37,300 to 149,100 during that same timeframe. This trajectory heavily outpaces traditional recreation, as peer-reviewed national trauma data indicates that annual e-bike injuries have soared by over 99% year-over-year, while injuries and hospitalizations for conventional, non-electrical bicycles have remained statistically flat.
Our number one goal is keeping your kids and our community safe. To do that, our officers will be stepping up face-to-face contacts with riders. If we see a violation, we will stop and talk. If the rider is a juvenile, we will be reaching out directly to parents to ensure everyone understands the rules. We are launching this initiative with a clear, two-phased approach:
Phase 1: Contact & Education. Our initial focus is talking with riders, explaining the rules, and partnering with parents to keep kids safe.

Phase 2: Citations & Enforcement. After this educational window, officers will transition to issuing formal citations and handling repeating or hazardous violations strictly.
