Originally known as Chalk Creek, the name "Coalville" was adopted when large quantities of the rock were discovered in the area.

The earliest settlers moved to the area in 1859 and largely survived by farming. Coal mining became a primary source of employment for families in beginning in the late 1860s. By 1873, a narrow-gauge railroad spur line had been built from Echo to the Wasatch Mine just east of Coalville.

Coalville once hosted a boarding school, several hotels, an opera house, and a railroad depot.
