Yesterday, Lt. Derr, FF/EMT Burdick & FF/EMT Wearne attended the Eastern Regional Fire School First Due Tactics class, gaining valuable hands-on experience through realistic, scenario-based training.

This course emphasized real-world first-due operations, challenging our firefighters to think critically, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions under simulated emergency conditions. Throughout the day, members rotated through multiple assignments, allowing them to practice a wide range of strategy and tactics while reinforcing teamwork, adaptability, and operational readiness.

Scenario-based training like this is essential to maintaining and sharpening the skills required on the fireground. By training in dynamic, realistic environments, our personnel are better prepared to safely and effectively serve our community when it matters most.

We are proud of our personnel for their continued commitment to professional development and for investing the time and effort to stay ready for the challenges of the job

Training the Best to Care for Our Youngest Patients

Tonight, Colchester Fire & EMS hosted a Pediatric Emergency CME focused on enhancing skills, confidence, and coordination when caring for children in emergency situations with 38 EMS providers in attendance.

This valuable training brought together our personnel alongside responders from Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department - MVFD , East Haddam Fire Department , Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department Inc., Bozrah Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., Newington, East Hampton Ambulance Association and Gardner Lake Volunteer Fire Company, strengthening regional preparedness and collaboration.

The class was expertly taught by our ALS provider, Connie Gustafson from Middlesex Health Paramedics. Her real-world experience and instruction provided critical insight into pediatric assessment, treatment, and team-based response.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this training a success. Ongoing education like this ensures we’re always ready to deliver the highest level of care, when it matters most.
