Mental Health Matters in Public Safety ❤️‍🩹

Being in public safety means we’re often there for others on their worst days. We respond to the calls, help people through difficult situations, and then go home and carry those experiences with us.

But we need to remember something important: first responders are human too.
It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to talk about what you’re going through. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength.
If you’re struggling, feeling overwhelmed, having a hard time after a call, or simply need someone to talk to, please reach out. Talk to a fellow firefighter, EMS provider, law enforcement officer, family member, friend, counselor, or someone you trust.

You don’t have to carry it alone. We look out for each other. 🚒❤️

MOVE OVER. SLOW DOWN. IT’S THE LAW.

When you see emergency lights and hear sirens, please slow down, move over, and give emergency responders room to work.

Our firefighters, EMS providers, law enforcement officers, and other first responders are out there protecting our community. A few extra seconds of caution can make the difference between everyone getting home safely and a tragedy.

🚨 August is Emergency Management Awareness Month! 🚨

Emergency management is about more than responding when disaster strikes — it’s about being prepared before it happens.

From severe weather and flooding to fires, power outages, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies, emergency managers work behind the scenes to help protect our communities and keep essential services operating.

This month, take a few minutes to:
✅ Build or update your emergency kit
✅ Make a family communication plan
✅ Sign up for local emergency alerts
✅ Know where to go during severe weather
✅ Check on your neighbors, especially those who may need extra assistance

Prepared communities are resilient communities. Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility!

Thank you to all of the emergency managers, first responders, volunteers, dispatchers, public safety partners, and community organizations who work together every day to keep our communities safe.

Be informed. Be prepared. Be ready. 🇺🇸

Today, Colon Community Fire and Rescue proudly recognizes and thanks our volunteer firefighters who answer the call when our community needs them most.

Volunteering means giving your time, training, and energy—often at a moment’s notice—to help protect our neighbors, families, businesses, and community. 🚒

To every volunteer firefighter who has served, is currently serving, or supports our department behind the scenes: THANK YOU! Your dedication, sacrifice, and commitment do not go unnoticed.

🚒 Another Great Night of Dual Dept Training! 🚒

Another great training session with Burr Oak Community Fire and Rescue!

Training focused on two critical firefighter skills: thermal imaging and Mayday operations. Our crews worked on using thermal imaging cameras to improve situational awareness and locate hazards, while also practicing Mayday procedures to ensure firefighters are prepared to call for help when they need it most.

Training together strengthens our skills, builds teamwork, and helps ensure we’re ready to respond when our communities need us.

Great job to everyone who participated! Stay safe and keep training!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague, Retired Firefighter/EMT Mark Lafontaine.

Mark dedicated many years of service to Colon Community Fire and Rescue. He was a passionate firefighter, a trusted mentor, and a beloved member of our department. Mark took great pride in serving his community. He was hardworking and dedicated, yet always ready with a joke, a laugh, and a smile that could lift the spirits of everyone around him. Especially on the toughest days.

He was truly one of a kind.

Beyond running calls, Mark gave countless hours to community events, including parade details, EMS standby at football games,helping with parking for Magic Week and just hanging out around the fire house. His commitment went far beyond the station.

We cannot fully express how much Mark meant to our department, our community, and to each of us who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He will be deeply missed.

Mark’s funeral will be held this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Full details are available on the Hackman Funeral Home website.

Rest easy, brother. Thank you for your service.

🚒 Training Together. Serving Together. 🚒

Last night the members of Colon Community Fire and Rescue and Burr Oak Community Fire and Rescue came together for a joint training exercise.

Training alongside our neighboring departments strengthens our skills, improves communication, and enhances our ability to work together when our communities need us most.

These opportunities help build strong relationships and ensure we can provide the highest level of service during emergencies.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and dedicated their time to continuing their education and sharpening their skills. Your commitment to teamwork and excellence makes both of our communities safer.
