On this day in 1885, the Ohio State University Board of Trustees voted to establish the School of Veterinary Medicine!

In the school's early years, nearly all classroom instruction, dissection, and laboratory exercises took place in the original University Hall building and a small building nearby that was used for anatomical dissection. But by 1891, veterinary students had a new facility: the first Veterinary Hospital.

The new facility included examination and surgical rooms, stables, lecture rooms, laboratories, a pharmacy, and a veterinary museum and library.

In 1926, Maudine Ormsby, an OSU Holstein, won Homecoming Queen, making Rosalind Morrison, the human favorite to be crowned, a runner-up and not too pleased about it. Morrison had beauty, brains and talent (She’d appeared in a number of Browning Dramatic society productions while at OSU.) Maudine was, well, a cow. Over the years, though, Morrison grew to love her “back story.”
Help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of Morrison’s loss to Maudine on Sept. 17 at Thompson Library. We’ll be giving out free ice cream from Parker Dairy Ice Cream, from the Ohio State Department of Food Science and Technology, and the Buckeye Dairy Club will be nearby on the Oval hosting a milk-a-cow event. Students walking west of Thompson Library are likely unaware of just how drastically different the campus landscape appeared in the past. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, the University Horticultural Gardens blanketed the campus west of Neil Avenue, presenting an array of plants, flowers, hedges, a lily pond, and a number of exotic plants. Did you know that the charming, house-like building near the athletic fields and Lincoln Tower at OSU is actually the Ohio State Women’s Field House?

Built in 1927, it was one of the country’s first spaces designed just for women’s athletics! With its rich, red exterior and stone foundation - some of it from an original campus barn- it’s got a truly unique history.

Over the years, it’s hosted everything from archery classes to supporting our recreation fields—and in 2002, the entire 100-ton building was even moved to make way for the RPAC! Learn more here: https://bit.ly/44QdTrm
