To***co policy expert Micah Berman, CPH Stephen F. Loebs Professor in Health Services Management and Policy, spoke to The Cancer Letter about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approving the first fruit-flavored electronic ci******es.

“It’s another sad sign for the FDA and for public health in the U.S.,” Berman said.

The FDA had previously taken a hard stance against the e-cigarette black market, in 2020 announcing a crackdown on unauthorized cartridge-based vapes, including fruit and mint flavors that appeal to children.

Theodore L. Wagener, founding director of Ohio State’s Center for To***co Research and a frequent CPH collaborator, said the authorization is tacit approval for millions of other flavored products.

“Flavors are a double-edged sword,” he said. “We’ve seen in our own research that flavors are appealing to adults. But the research clearly suggests that they’re very appealing to kids too.”
