Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying & Science

Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying & Science CBI maps, measures, and manages data to predict the physical environment and support decision making.

The CBI, part of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has achieved and maintains a national reputation for developing innovative geospatial science research and serves as a focused resource area for geospatial datasets relevant to the coastal environment. The institute is also home to two degree programs: a bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science and a master's degree in Geospatial Surveying Engineering.

This week, we've been hosting our GELS Summer Institute, a week-long professional development program for high school STEM and CTE instructors.

Teachers from across the region are getting hands-on training with geospatial engineering and land surveying tools, exploring curriculum integration strategies, and learning how to build geospatial CTE pathways at their schools. Offered in partnership with educational and industry experts, we’re empowering educators to bring advanced GIS, surveying, and spatial-technology education to their classrooms!

Researchers with CBI's Coastal Dynamics Lab have been working with Texas Sea Grant to test a flood monitoring system to help officials in Rockport and Aransas County better predict and prepare for coastal flooding events. The collaborative efforts were recently highlighted in the Rockport Pilot.

Coastal flooding is a recurring issue along the Texas coast, and Rockport is one of several communities participating in a research initiative aimed at tracking floodwaters to improve long-term resilience

Did you know our main conference room is home to an art installation where art, science, and a sense of place and time intersect? "Where Texas Meets the Gulf" is a striking Collagraph with Monotype three-piece series by local artist and TAMU-CC faculty member Silas Breaux. Each piece reflects upon the complex relationship between the natural world and built environments, a theme that resonates deeply with the coastal landscapes and human impact that shape our region.

We’re honored to showcase local talent and add such meaningful work to our space. To learn more about Silas’ work, visit his website at silasbreaux.com or follow him on Instagram to see more of his inspiring pieces.

Whether from storm surge along the coast or flash flooding along inland rivers, the long-term goal of the research is to create a reliable, easy to use system that can help communities better prepare for flooding events. Thanks to Maclovio Perez and Crossroads Today for this special highlight!

The Gulf is rising faster than you think. A Texas researcher says smarter flood warnings could be the key to staying ahead. 🌧️
