It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of two courageous officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
Sergeant Mark Butler of the Navasota Police Department was tragically killed in a head-on collision. Officers had initiated a vehicle pursuit in College Station, which ended on Highway 6 when the suspect struck Sergeant Butler's vehicle head-on. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene, and Sergeant Butler was transported to a local hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Deputy Jesus Vargas of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, a dedicated member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, was tragically shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant with his partner. The suspect fled the scene but was later located and killed by police.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Mark Butler and Deputy Jesus Vargas. We also extend our sympathies to the communities of Navasota and Brazoria County as they mourn these profound losses.
It is always difficult to share news of a fallen officer, but this post is especially heartbreaking.
