I never told my parents that I was the one who repurchased our family home; my sister let everyone believe it was her. While she was bragging in front of our relatives, my eight-year-old daughter tripped and spilled juice on her shoe. My sister kicked my little girl and screamed, âDo you have any idea how expensive these are, you useless brat?â I helped my daughter up, ready to tell the truth. Panicking, my sister accused me of plotting revenge. In front of 200 guests, my mother slapped me until I hit the floor. âWhat have you ever done for this family? Get out!â I wiped the blood from my mouth and made a single phone call: âCancel the contract.â
The âGrand Reopeningâ party for the Vance Mansion was in full, ostentatious swing. Sarah, my younger sister, stood in the center of the ballroom, soaking up fake praise for having âsavedâ the family legacy from foreclosure. I stayed in the shadows, holding a tray of hors dâoeuvres, playing the role of the useless sister so she could shine.
But then, a small accident changed everything. Mia, my eight-year-old daughter, tripped and spilled her grape juice onto Sarahâs cream-colored suede heels.
âGet off me! âSarah shrieked.
And in front of two hundred guests, she raised her leg and kicked my daughter hard in the chest. The blow sent Mia flying backward, curled up and screaming in pain.
âYou little destroyer, just like your mother! âSarah roared, more worried about her $1,200 shoes than her own niece.
I dropped the tray and ran to my daughter.
âYou just kicked her âI said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.
My mother, Margaret, pushed her way through the crowd. She didn't look at Mia. She looked at Sarahâs stained shoe and then turned to me.
SLAP!
A burning strike hit my cheek, sending me reeling.
âGet out! âshe bellowedâ. You are a disgrace to this family! Sarah saved us, and you are nothing but a parasite.
The music continued to play in the ballroom, but no one was listening. Every eye was fixed on me: the woman who had just been slapped by her own mother in the middle of her familyâs âvictoriousâ party. At my feet, Mia was still clutching her chest, sobbing uncontrollably after her aunt's brutal kick.
âWhy are you still standing there? âmy mother screamed, pointing a trembling finger at the doorâ. Get out! I donât want to see you or your brat ever again! Sarah is the savior of this family; you are nothing but envious trash.
Sarah was nearby, wiping her $1,200 suede heels with a sneer of contempt plastered on her face.
âLeave, Elena. And teach your kid how to walk properly. Next time, I wonât be so âgentle.â
I wiped the blood from my split lip. The physical pain vanished, replaced by a cold, terrifying calm.
âFine âI said, my voice quiet, but loud enough to cut through the stunned silence of the roomâ. Iâm leaving. But Iâm taking what is mine.
I took out my phone, unlocked the screen, and tapped a contact saved as âEmergency.â I put it on speaker and held it high.
It rang twice.
A deep, authoritative male voice answered...
