🎉 Fireman's Park Reopens Monday, July 20! 🌳
We're excited to announce that Fireman's Park will officially reopen on Monday, July 20, 2026! This exciting improvement project is nearly complete and has transformed Fireman's Park into a more accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable space for everyone. This park will be open daily from dawn to dusk.
The Village of Decatur was awarded a Michigan Recreation Passport Grant of $150,000, with a Village match of $199,300, to complete Phase I of the project. Phase I improvements include:
✅ Renovated paved parking lot with two ADA/van-accessible parking spaces
✅ ADA-accessible walking paths connecting the parking lot to park amenities
✅ Renovated sport courts, converting the former tennis courts into pickleball courts
✅ New sport court fencing with ADA-compliant gates
✅ New ADA-accessible drinking fountain with pet bowl
✅ New ADA-accessible benches with companion seating
✅ Native landscaping and plantings
✅ Freshly painted pavilion
Phase II of the proposed project will include new ADA accessible playground equipment, additional ADA benches with companion seating, additional native plantings and landscaping. The Village is also considering renovating the existing vault toilets in the next phase of the project.
📣📣📣Important Information for Visitors:📣📣📣
⚠️ Please stay on the paved pathways. Prior to becoming Fireman's Park, this property was used as a landfill/dump site. While extensive improvements have been completed, small amounts of glass and other inert materials may still be present in the soil. The Village continues to work with project partners on long-term improvements to further enhance the park.
🚧 Park signage has not yet been installed. We ask everyone to be courteous and respectful while using the park. Please share the pickleball courts so everyone has an opportunity to play.
🐾 No animals are permitted inside the fenced pickleball court area.
We are proud to provide these improvements for our residents and visitors and look forward to seeing the community enjoy Fireman's Park for years to come. A special thank you to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant Program, our project partners, contractors, and everyone who helped make these improvements possible!
