Judi's House

Judi's House Judi's House is a community-based nonprofit bereavement center for children and families.

Founded by former NFL quarterback Brian Griese and his wife, Dr. Brook Griese, Judi’s House is a tribute to Brian’s mother, Judi, whom he lost to breast cancer when he was 12. As Brian grew up grieving this loss, he made a commitment to use his resources to positively impact grieving children. The Grieses discovered that there were no organizations devoted to this population and dedicated themselv

es to offering a safe, compassionate environment where children could grieve and begin the lifelong healing process.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

The impact of su***de reaches far beyond the individual. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), 1 in 4 bereaved children have experienced the death of a parent due to su***de, alcohol-induced death, or accidental drug overdose.

The death of someone important by su***de can affect children and families in profound ways, adding layers of stigma and complexity to the grieving process.

Throughout September, we'll be sharing resources, practical tips, and supportive information for navigating grief after a su***de-related death, as well as su***de prevention resources and ways to support those who may be struggling. 💜

The data is clear: nearly 45% of children eligible for Social Security survivor benefits after the death of a parent are not receiving them, resulting in an estimated $15.5 billion in unclaimed support annually.

In a recent ThinkAdvisor article, Micki Burns, PhD, CEO of Judi’s House/JAG Institute, discusses how awareness and advocacy can help connect children and families to resources that support long-term well-being and stability.

Thanks to Rob Burgess and ThinkAdvisor for shining a spotlight on childhood bereavement and how data can help identify critical gaps in support for children and families.

Forty-five percent of eligible children don't get survivor benefits, but advisors can help.

New Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) data shows that 1 in 4 bereaved children has experienced a parent’s death due to su***de, alcohol-induced death, or accidental drug overdose.

As conversations about fentanyl continue across the country, it's important to recognize the impact a death can have on the children and families left behind. Deaths related to substance use can be accompanied by stigma, making it more difficult for children and families to access support, talk openly about their grief, and feel understood within their communities.

CBEM data provides important insights into the experiences of grieving children, helping inform the field's understanding of childhood bereavement and the support families need after a death. By increasing awareness of the experiences behind the data, we can help create more informed, compassionate responses to grief.
