Construction of the Chapel was begun in October of 1930 and completed two years later. During that time students continually congregated at the stonemasons’ huts to watch the Chapel take shape. It was first used for Commencement in 1932 and was formally dedicated on June 2, 1935.image of first commencement

Duke Chapel continues to be a Christian church of uniquely interdenominational character and purpose. Through its tradition of inspiring worship and music, and a calling to walk with people of all faiths and circumstances, Duke Chapel stands as a beacon of hope on campus and in the community that bridges faith and learning. 🎼 This video clip from last Sunday's Bach Cantata concert is of the beginning of G. F. Handel's Italian duet “Nò, di voi non vuo fidarmi." In it, you can hear the music that Handel later transforms into the movement "For unto us a Child is Born" in his oratorio "Messiah."

New in the Chapel: "Sacred are the waters," an exhibition of poems by Duke medical student Kiran Masroor. Fourteen poems, framed individually and read as one larger mythology, interweave life and death and build toward a climactic, ecstatic section where the two meet. Presented through the C. Eric Lincoln Theology and Arts Fellowship. On view October 2 through November 5. Come sit with them.

Our service of Choral Evensong provides a chance to pause, listen, and reflect as the music and liturgy unfold around you. All are warmly welcome at the service this Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

The opening song in the service, "Hail, Gladdening Light," is by Charles Wood (1866–1926). Wood combines rich harmonic language and careful interpretation of his texts to create works central to the Anglican choral repertoire.

We welcome to the Chapel staff our new Director of Community Ministry, Dr. Craig Glover Hines.

In this role, he will guide Duke Chapel’s commitment to community engagement, with a focus on justice-oriented, faith-based initiatives and student service in Durham. He will also act as a faith ambassador through Duke Community Affairs.

“Craig has the heart of a minister to relate to people in all kinds of circumstances, and the mind of a scholar to understand the complex social, historical, and spiritual forces that shape our community,” Duke Chapel Dean Luke Powery says. “We look forward to his leadership in recognizing and participating in the enormous opportunities for ministry, discovery, relationship, and witness at the interface between Duke, Durham, and beyond.”
