At 7:53 last night, Otisfield Fire was called to a woods fire in the area of Canada Hill Shore. The fire was reported by several people on boats on the lake who could see smoke coming from the woods.

Upon arrival, crews could smell smoke but could not see any visible smoke or fire from Rt. 121. Deputy Chief Fox climbed the mountain and located the fire, which was later determined to be much more accessible from Bean Road.

We are incredibly thankful to a homeowner who allowed us full access to his property. His willingness to help made accessing this fire significantly easier for our crews.

Crews worked until approximately 11:00 PM last night before leaving the scene. They were called back at 9:30 this morning to address remaining hot spots and finally cleared the scene around 2:30 this afternoon.

The fire consumed just over one acre of land and the use of UTV’s was critical in putting the fire out. Forestry 12 - “The Monster” was able to get through the woods with ease and was instrumental for suppression of this fire. 

After investigation, the Forest Ranger determined the fire was “an act of nature — lightning from the storm early this week.” We’ll make a separate post explaining how a fire can start from lightning and not become visible until days later.

We are especially grateful for our mutual aid departments who came out to assist. This was a challenging call — steep terrain, hot and muggy conditions, rain, darkness, and multiple ground wasp stings to our crews.

There was no loss of property and no injuries to personnel.

At 6:34 this morning we were called to 1127 St. Rt. 121 for a “tree in the road” - When we arrived on scene, we confirmed that there definitely WAS a tree in the road - blocking both lanes of traffic.

OTFD quickly cleared the road to make it passable.

MDOT has been notified of the hazard.

We had about 10 cars waiting to get though Thanks for you patience while waiting for us to get the road open.

Reminder, burning permits are required for all outdoor fires, with the exception of campfires. No permits will be issued today per the State determined fire danger.

Campfires must be in a contained ring and no larger than 3' x 3'. If you are going to have a campfire, we would suggest having a water source nearby just in case!!

Be Smart - Be Safe!

Good morning,

We have had a couple of calls last night and this morning with the concern of the odor of smoke in the air:

The haze you're seeing across Otisfield, and much of Maine, is most likely from wildfire smoke drifting in from large fires burning in Canada.

Most of the smoke is staying high in the atmosphere, so air quality isn't expected to be a major concern for most people. That said, some people may notice the smell of smoke or have irritated eyes or breathing, especially if they have asthma or other heart or lung conditions.

If you're sensitive to smoke, it may be a good idea to take it easy outdoors today.

The good news is that the smoke should begin to clear as weather moves through the area over the next day or so.

Final woods fire update!

We have cleared the woods fire! Crews have been sent home for some much needed rest!

Day 1 - We had a lot of help and we are very grateful for the following agencies:
Otisfield, Casco, Harrison, Naples, Oxford, Norway, Paris, Waterford, Lovell, Sweden, Windham, Raymond, Poland, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Auburn, Bridgton, Baldwin, PACE Ambulance, Maine Forest Service. Multiple other agencies provided fill-in support for the previous mention departments at their stations.

Everett Excavation worked to dig a fire line to ensure the fire was fully contained and eliminating the potential for further spread.

We would like to thank the Oxford County Regional Communications Center (911 Dispatch). We had agencies from 3 different counties and this was a large undertaking for them! THANK YOU!

Day 2:
Back at the scene, personnel from the Maine Forest Service completed their investigation and assessment. Burn area encompasses 5.5 acres. Over 1000 feet of hose was deployed. Crews from Otisfield, Casco, Harrison, Oxford, and Sweden, assisted with cleanup, organization of tools and equipment, and putting apparatus back into full service.

This isn’t an event we see in small town fire very often. We are so fortunate to have amazing mutual aide companies that assisted!

And to the Town Of Otisfield Residents - The food, drinks, coolers, ice, offers to assist and the thank you messages and posts we are seeing & receiving are not going unnoticed!!! We are grateful for a community who supports the fire department so much! ❤️
