On Saturday night Marine 25 assisted the Point Lookout Lido FD at the Town of Hempstead Endless Summer Concert and Fireworks Show.

Marine 25 was responsible to provide any marine based fire suppression if required and also provided a great night time operations training evolution for our captains in training.

While schools have officially started to open, it’s far from the end of this years boating season and the Department continues to maintain a high readiness posture to respond to any marine incident.

Know your waterways and charts, use your navigation lights at night, and be safe out on the water.

You might join for the training, but you stay for the people.

In the East Rockaway Fire Department, you quickly learn that being part of the department is about more than learning the job. It’s about the people standing next to you during training, answering calls with you in the middle of the night, and having your back when things get tough.

That kind of bond doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s a big part of what makes ERFD special.

No experience is needed. We provide the training, the gear, and the support to help you get started.

If you’ve ever thought about joining, come see what it means to be part of the ERFD family.

New Equipment!

Ambulance 4081 was just outfitted with the Stryker Power Load system and new Power Pro 2 Cot which will dramatically increase the safety of our patients and providers during the loading and unloading processes.

The Power Load system completely supports the weight of the Cot and allows the operator to load or unload the cot out of the ambulance with the press of a button. The new Power Pro 2 cot works seamlessly with the power load, as well as hydraulically raises and lowers the cot to a desired height during operations. This is a much welcomed upgrade from our manual stretchers.

Members of the Rescue Squad spent the morning learning the new system and we look forward to putting it into service soon!

This afternoon the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Lawson Ave for a smoke in the basement.

Ladder 403 and Engine 404 arrived almost simultaneously to find a smoke condition in the basement from an unknown source. A line was immediately stretched to the front door while units investigated, finding a RC Car that was charging had caught fire.

The toy was removed from the residence and fully extinguished and the structure was searched for any extension.

Engine 406, Engine 405, Ambulance 408, and Command Post 4091 also responded to the scene and operated for an hour.

The Office of the Fire Marshal - County of Nassau was notified to respond due to the presence of Lithium Ion batteries involved in the fire.

It is extremely important to never allow Lithium Ion Batteries to charge unattended, and should be done outside if possible.

On Monday evening members of the East Rockaway Fire Department traveled to Freeport to attend a Dive Tender Training hosted by the Freeport Fire Department Dive Squad and Marine Unit. Attendees learned the basics of tendering, search patterns, and dive operations and put their new skills to the test with hands on drills.

Joint trainings like these are critically important to allow our teams to work seamlessly together when they jointly respond to Dive Incidents.

This afternoon the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted for Auto-Mutual Aid to the Oceanside NY Fire Department for the report of a smell of natural gas coming from a commercial establishment on Lawson Blvd.

Upon the arrival of Assistant Chief Bristol and Island Park Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief 221A, it was determined that there was an odor of burning in the occupancy with an active water leak or sprinkler activation coming from an adjoining business.

Engine 405 arrived on scene and forced the door to the adjoining occupancy to find a significant area of burned and charred ceiling in a vacant bathroom that was held in check by the sprinkler system.

Assistant Chief 221B, Ladder 403, Engine 224, and Engine 249 responded and assisted in stretching one hose line and performing overhaul.

The scene was left in the hands of the Office of the Fire Marshal - County of Nassau.
