This afternoon the East Rockaway Fire Department was notified for a mutual aid request for a Ladder to respond to assist the Oceanside NY Fire Department at the scene of an electrical fire at Staples that caused a significant smoke condition and dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide throughout the large commercial establishment.

This afternoon the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted for a kayaker in the water in the vicinity of the Woodmere Bay Yatch Club.

First arriving unit Assistant Chief Bristol found a kayaker that had flipped their kayak and was in the water holding on to the edge of a second kayak.

Assistant Chief Bristol was able to assist the individual out of the water and up onto the Docks without incident and was evaluated and released by Ambulance 408

Assistant Chief V. Torborg, Heavy Rescue 407, Marine 25, and Ambulances 408 and 4081 responded to the scene to assist along side the Nassau County Police Department and Town of Hempstead Bay Constables.

There is a solid lesson in today’s incident. The Individual was in the water for approximate 20-25 minute before the fire department was notified and was unable to resurface his kayak or swim to shore. Having a life jacket and going out with a buddy boat made this a positive ending.
