Residents,
A reminder that Alaska is home to a bird species called the “Dark Eyed Junco”. This species is federally protected – and severe penalties can occur if there is harm to them/their nests. It is illegal to capture, keep, sell or destroy active nests.
Nests are (typically) found in backyards – they seem to like longer grass, areas under trampolines. Nests have also been found in dryer vents, car engines and even on a couple of front porches.
If you find a nest, please contact our team. If in the grass, we will coordinate with Mainscape to skip your yard for mowing and lock your gate, with a sign posted – advising an active nest is in the grass. If the nest is in your car, dryer vent, front porch (etc) – we will work with the Eielson Natural Resources team to determine what options we have to (1) keep the bird/the nest safe (2) ensure the resident can drive their car, access their home.
We appreciate your support and welcome any questions. Please reach out to our team at 907-302-2170 anytime.
