WEDNESDAY WISDOM —
SEPTEMBER 16, 1787
The day before history was signed.
On September 16, 1787, the delegates in Philadelphia were nearing the end of an extraordinary journey.
For nearly four months, they had debated some of the most difficult questions a new nation could face:
How much power should the federal government have?
How could large states and small states both have a voice?
How could government be strong enough to govern — yet restrained enough to protect liberty?
They did not agree on everything.
They argued.
They reconsidered.
They compromised.
And sometimes they accepted provisions they personally would have written differently.
That may be one of the greatest lessons of the Constitutional Convention:
Wisdom does not always mean getting everything you want. Sometimes wisdom is recognizing what must be preserved so that something greater can endure.
By this point, the final draft had been approved and was being carefully prepared on parchment for the delegates to sign on September 17.
The Constitution was not the work of men who thought alike.
It was the work of men who understood that the future of a nation depended upon finding a way to govern together.
Tomorrow, we remember the moment they placed their names beneath those words.
Today, we remember the wisdom, debate, compromise, and courage that brought them there.
