The Hancock County Sheriff's Office maintains this page to share updates and encourage discussion on issues affecting our community. For several years, our policy has prohibited comments that are considered “off-topic,” meaning not related to the original post. A federal judge has determined that such a rule would need to be applied so consistently that it would create an unreasonable adm

inistrative burden. As a result, the Sheriff's Office has reevaluated its comments policy and determined that the best approach is one that supports robust public conversation. Therefore, with the exception of a few narrow categories of speech recognized by the Supreme Court as unprotected, we will no longer remove comments. Moving forward, only the following types of comments will be removed: hate speech, “fighting words,” incitement of violence, “true threats,” defamation, fraud, speech integral to criminal conduct, obscenity, and child po*******hy. If you believe a comment falls into one of these categories, please contact the Sheriff's Office to let us know.
