🐟 C’iyals (fall-run Chinook salmon), absent from the upper Klamath River for over a century, have recently returned to their spawning grounds following dam removal in 2024.

A member of the Klamath and Modoc Tribes, Paul Robert Wolf Wilson spoke with library archivists about the cultural and environmental impacts of the historic dam removals. A photographer working within his ancestral homelands of Southern Oregon and Northern California, his practice centers on visual sovereignty and land-based storytelling—examining the deep relationships between people and place.

Notice anything missing on this map of the Americas? 🗺️ 🤔 The Pacific Northwest was still "terra incognita" when it was printed in 1652.

The map is part of the Cosmographie by Peter Heylyn — a big book that attempted to record everything in the (then) known world. Alongside fanciful geographies of Faerie Land and Utopia, it Included what were most likely the first-ever descriptions of far-off, "exotic," but real-world places like California and Australia.

After centuries of reading, all 1,124 pages were coming loose in our Special Collections' edition. Learn more about this fascinating tome and see how our conservators stabilized the pages and resewed them into a secure new binding.

Every year, Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is pleased to provide funding opportunities for research into our diverse and rich collections.

Specific awards support those interested in studying materials related to feminist science fiction, LGBTQ+ issues, Ken Kesey and the '60s counter-culture, conservative and libertarian movements, Pulitzer-winning photojournalist Brian Lanker, and the political legacy of U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio. 📌 Application DEADLINE: January 8, 2027.

We also provide general awards to support research, teaching, and creative work that engages with any of SCUA’s unique collections. Individual awards for undergraduates, grad students, faculty, and community members.

This Saturday, 7 p.m. at WOW Hall: Eugene Environmental Film Festival presents the world premiere of the director's cut of "pickAxe." ⛏️ 📹 🌲

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Cascadia Free State's victorious blockade of salvage logging at Warner Creek in Willamette National Forest, co-director Tim Lewis will introduce this "longer, wilder, funnier" new version of his influential documentary. Admission is sliding scale, $5-$50, but none will be turned away!

Did you know? Tim Lewis's entire archives—thousands of hours of documentary footage—has recently been acquired by UO Libraries' Special Collections & University Archives. Our preserving these materials means future generations of researchers and storytellers will continue to have access to rare, documented history of the Pacific Northwest.

Following three years of processing work by our dedicated team of archivists, the Peter A. DeFazio Papers are now available for public access!

The longest-serving member of U.S. Congress in our state’s history, Peter DeFazio (D) represented Oregon's 4th District from 1987 to 2023. His papers are now permanently held in our Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Occupying 384 containers and 468 gigabytes of digital storage space, it's the largest collection in our repository.

The collection encompasses correspondence, copies of legislation, op-eds, press releases, newspaper clippings, photographs, office records, and ephemera. Additional materials predating DeFazio’s tenure in Congress are also preserved, including documentation of his formative political work in Lane County.

The collection is open to the public but must be used in the SCUA Reading Room in Knight Library. Patrons are encouraged to contact SCUA in advance of their visit.

Happy National Vinyl Record Day!

🔈👂 On August 12, 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. It was the first technology that could record sound and play it back.

Fast forward 149 years ⏩ and you'll find over over 22,000 vinyl LPs in UO Libraries' vast Audio Collection. We also have 16,500 CDs, 1,000 cassettes, and many recent student recital recordings. It all adds up to one of the largest music collections in the state of Oregon!

You can explore it all by "digging the crates" in the Douglass Room (located in the northwest corner of the third floor of Knight Library). Many of these recordings are also available to check out and listen to at home.

All of Oregon is beautiful on the surface. But it can also be instructive to take in "the view from on high" of the place where you live!

With over a million unique images, the UO Libraries holds one of the most extensive collections of aerial photography covering the Beaver State.

Primarily paper prints but also original film and digital photographs, the earliest images date from 1929, but the majority of the photographs were taken in the 1930s up to the 2000s. There's a good chance you can find your home, place of employment, or favorite landmarks in here!

All are welcome to use our collection. However, arrangements to view photographs must be made ahead of time. Please use the Aerial Photography Research Service Request form to request an appointment to view photographs in Knight Library.

Important reminder for UO Faculty: 🗓️ 🔜 Monday, August 31 is the deadline to submit your manuscripts for free Gold OA publication in Wiley journals.

Under the recent agreement between the Big Ten Academic Alliance and academic publisher Wiley, UO-affiliated corresponding authors have the opportunity to publish OA articles free of charge in Wiley Gold OA journals.

However, unlike in previous years, there will be a capped number of article publishing credits available to the BTAA during this agreement. To guarantee coverage of article processing charges, all Gold OA manuscripts must be submitted by August 31, 2026 AND be editorially accepted with the author agreement completed by December 31, 2027.
