Breaking News: The Governor Calls a Special Session for the Gas Line Bill!

In the final days of the regular session, there has been serious effort to pass a gas line bill. Stay tuned for this weeks edition of the Carrick Capitol Connection for a recap of the gas line bill from the past week, and what to expect for the upcoming special session.

The special session starts on Thursday May 21 at 10:00 a.m. here in the Capitol.

Breaking News: Governor Vetoes Pension Bill!

Tonight, the Governor vetoed the bill to establish a defined benefit pension retirement system for Alaskan teachers, police officers, firefighters, and all public employees. While this veto is a deep loss for building a maintaining a strong Alaskan workforce, the decision is sadly not surprising.

There will be continued efforts to support recruitment and retention of Alaska's public sector, and I am grateful to my colleagues for all the work and dedication that they have put into these issues and to moving our state forward.

Alaska Legislature Passes Student Fee Transparency Act 👉https://conta.cc/4uiR5eW

Yesterday, the Alaska Senate passed HB 176, the Student Fee Transparency Act, which boosts student fee transparency at the University of Alaska by requiring itemized billing and timely notification of fee changes. This bill was developed in collaboration with Senator Robert Myers' office and builds on the success of the Textbook Cost Transparency Act we passed in 2024.

Alaska Legislature Passes Bill Adding Faculty Member to the UA Board of Regents 👉 https://conta.cc/42E2zxv

I am excited to share that yesterday the Alaska Senate passed my bill to add a tenured faculty member to the University of Alaska Board of Regents -- increasing stakeholder representation on the Board -- in a strong vote of 18-2. This has been a long-sought request by University faculty and stakeholders and I am pleased to see this bill pass the Legislature.

HB 10 now heads back to the House for a procedural concurrence vote, and then will await transmittal to the Governor for his consideration.
