Established in 1979, we are a local nonprofit supporting people in Greater St. Charles County and Jefferson County. Sunnyhill, formerly the Council for Extended Care, was founded in 1978 by 18 Missouri Families who wanted to create a world of opportunity for their children with developmental disabilities. In 1980, the organization opened Sunnyhill Adventures, one of the country's first all-inclusi
ve recreational camps for adults and children with developmental disabilities in the St. In 1986, Sunnyhill opened their first residential home to provide individualized supported living for those affected with developmental disabilities. In 1998, Sunnyhill Adventures On The Road Program was introduced, allowing clients the opportunity to visit places like Branson, Nashville, Memphis, and more! In 2009, Sunnyhill launched Sunnyhill University, designed to give children and adults with disabilities valuable life skills including support to venture our of their homes, information about their communities, socialization, and the benefits of a productive lifestyle. Sunnyhill U creates an environment that fosters interests, creativity, confidence, independence, and dignity, all while teaching individuals how to be active members of society. In 2011, Sunnyhill began offering Behavioral Support Services, which are designed to teach adaptive skills to replace previously learned unsafe behaviors. Then, in 2015, Sunnyhill opened the Independence Center in DeSoto, situated on 18-acres. At this location, Sunnyhill introduced the Family Resource & Advocacy Center, the first of its kind in the state, giving families an opportunity to reach out for support in one, convenient location. Annually, Sunnyhill serves over 1,000 individuals with developmental disabilities, and provides both full-time and part-time care to clients living in residential homes, or in their own homes. None of this would be possible without the love and support of our volunteers, donors, and staff.
