North Lyon Fire would like to remind our community that changing weather conditions this week can quickly increase wildfire concerns across Northern Nevada.

Today will bring breezy conditions with west winds of 15–20 MPH and gusts up to 30 MPH. Even with cooler temperatures, gusty winds can rapidly spread fires caused by discarded smoking materials, equipment use, target shooting, or unattended outdoor burning.

Fire season is already heating up in Northern Nevada and it takes everyone to stay safe.

This past week, personnel from the North Lyon Fire Protection District responded to 80 calls for service between May 17, 2026, at 0800 hours and May 24, 2026, at 0759 hours.

Our firefighters remain dedicated to delivering professional emergency services to the Fernley community and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

As we observe Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect upon and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

At approximately 12:40 AM, North Lyon Fire crews responded to the SR-447 in the Nixon area as part of a mutual aid response request from Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue for a reported traffic collision.

Responding units arrived to find a vehicle fully involved in fire with extension into the surrounding vegetation. Crews worked alongside assisting agencies to contain and extinguish the fire while preventing further spread into nearby brush and grass.

Patient care and transport operations were handled by Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue and Battle Born Medevac. North Lyon Fire is proud to support our regional partners through mutual aid agreements that help ensure resources and personnel are available when emergencies happen, regardless of jurisdictional boundaries.

We appreciate the teamwork and coordination demonstrated by all responding agencies during today’s incident.

Do you have a home evacuation plan?

Whether it’s a nearby wildfire, structure fire, gas leak, or another emergency, having a plan before an emergency happens can make all the difference.

Here are a few important things every family should discuss:
- Identify at least two ways out of every room in your home
- Choose a meeting location outside and away from the home
- Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1
- Practice your evacuation plan regularly, including at night
- Keep important items such as medications, pet supplies, and important documents easy to access
- Don’t forget to include your pets in your evacuation planning

During an emergency, seconds matter. A well-practiced evacuation plan can help reduce confusion, panic, and delays when it matters most.

Take a few minutes this weekend to sit down with your family and review your plan. Preparedness starts at home.

At North Lyon Fire, every one of our firefighters holds emergency medical certifications, including EMT and/or Paramedic licensure. Emergency medical services are a critical part of what we do each day in service to our community.

To help tell the story of EMS responses in Fernley, here is a breakdown of patient transport destinations from the month of April 2026:

93% — Ground Transports to Reno Area Hospitals
5.6% — Ground Transports to Fallon
1.4% — Transports to Helicopter Landing Zones for air medical transport

These numbers highlight an important reality of emergency medical services in our area: advanced specialty care is only available outside of our immediate community. This often means extended transport times for our crews and longer periods committed to patient care while away from the district.

Whether responding to a life-threatening emergency, coordinating with regional hospital systems, or delivering patients to air medical crews at landing zones, our personnel remain committed to providing high-quality care to the residents and visitors of our community.

This National EMS Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of our firefighter/paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, and our regional EMS partners who answer the call each and every day for our community.

At North Lyon Fire, Emergency Medical Services make up a significant portion of what we do. In the month of April 2026 alone, over 81% of our responses were for medical emergencies. These calls range from traumatic injuries and serious illnesses to cardiac events, breathing emergencies, and critical patient care situations where every second matters.

While many people traditionally associate the fire service with fires, the reality is that today’s fire service is heavily rooted in emergency medical care. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, roughly 75% of all calls for service for fire agencies nationwide are EMS-related. Here in our community, that percentage is even higher.

Our personnel train extensively to provide advanced life support, rapid intervention, and compassionate care during what are often some of the most difficult moments in a person’s life.

We are proud to serve the Fernley community alongside our healthcare and public safety partners, and we remain committed to providing professional, compassionate, and high-quality emergency medical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Every day, our paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, dispatchers, nurses, flight crews, and healthcare partners work together to provide critical care to our community during some of life’s most challenging moments. From medical emergencies on our highways to critical patient care and interfacility transports, these partnerships are essential to the safety and well-being of the Fernley area and beyond.

We are incredibly honored to work alongside our regional EMS partners who answer the call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your professionalism, dedication, compassion, and teamwork make a difference in countless lives every single day.

Just before 6:30 am this morning, North Lyon Fire units were dispatched to a traffic collision involving a passenger vehicle and a school bus on US 95A at Cottonwood Lane.

Firefighters arrived on scene and extricated the driver from the passenger vehicle. That driver was transported to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. There were no students on the school bus at the time of the incident, and no reported injuries to the bus driver.

This incident serves as an important reminder for motorists to remain alert, slow down, and use extra caution during the early morning hours when traffic volumes increase with commuters and school transportation operations.

North Lyon Fire would like to thank our partner agencies for their assistance and cooperation on scene this morning.

Please continue to drive safely and watch for emergency vehicles and school buses throughout our community.

This past week, North Lyon Fire personnel proudly responded to a wide variety of calls for service throughout the Fernley area - from medical emergencies and traffic collisions to fire-related incidents and mutual aid responses.

We are incredibly proud to serve this community and grateful for the trust that our residents place in us every day. The relationships we build with our community matter to us, and we remain committed to being there when you need us most.

Even though yesterday brought a reminder that Northern Nevada weather can still feel a little like winter, warmer temperatures are returning as we head toward the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. As more people begin spending time outdoors, please remember to stay aware of fire conditions, practice safe driving habits, and keep safety at the forefront of your plans.
