This morning, just before 5:00 AM, North Lyon Fire crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Bridle Path Way for a reported outside fire.

Arriving units found that nearby residents had already extinguished a small fence and brush fire prior to our arrival. Thanks to their quick actions, the fire was kept small and prevented from spreading to nearby exposures.

Fortunately, damage was limited to a small section of fencing and vegetation, and no injuries were reported.

As temperatures rise and vegetation continues to dry out, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report fires immediately. Early notification and rapid action can make all the difference.

The cause of this fire is under investigation.

This past week was another busy one for North Lyon Fire as our crews responded to a wide variety of emergencies throughout the Fernley area. From medical incidents and traffic collisions to fire-related calls and public assists, our firefighters remained ready to serve the community 24 hours a day.

As summer arrives we encourage everyone to remain mindful of fire safety. Dry vegetation, warm temperatures, and seasonal winds can quickly increase fire danger. This week, we responded to more than one illegal residential controlled burn. Please follow all current fire restrictions and avoid activities that could spark a wildfire - and remember, residential burning is suspended for the season in all areas of the North Lyon Fire Protection District and the City of Fernley.

One of the highlights of the week came after an emergency call on Saturday, June 20. Once the incident was mitigated, our crews had the opportunity to spend some time with local families and show them around Engine 61. We always enjoy connecting with the community we serve, especially when we can give kids and families a closer look at the equipment and firefighters that respond when help is needed.

Thank you to our firefighters, dispatchers, partner agencies, and community members for your continued support. It is an honor to serve the residents and visitors of Fernley and the North Lyon Fire Protection District.

Today, we want to take a moment to recognize the fathers of North Lyon Fire and all the dads throughout our community.

Whether they’re answering emergency calls at all hours, supporting their families at home, coaching youth sports, helping with homework, or simply being there when they’re needed most, fathers play an important role both in our fire district and in our lives.

We are grateful for the dedication, sacrifice, leadership, and example set by the dads who serve our community every day. Their commitment to protecting others often means spending time away from their own families, and we appreciate the support of those families who stand behind them.

From all of us at North Lyon Fire, we wish every father, grandfather, stepfather, and father figure a safe, happy, and well-deserved Father’s Day.

A Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather is now in effect for the Fernley area from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM today.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to increase this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for dry lightning and gusty, erratic outflow winds up to 50 mph. These conditions can rapidly increase wildfire danger.

Please avoid activities that can create sparks near dry vegetation.

FIRE RESTRICTIONS BEGIN JUNE 22 IN WESTERN NEVADA

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will take effect on public lands throughout much of Western Nevada beginning Monday, June 22, 2026. These restrictions are being implemented by federal and state land management agencies to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires as we enter the peak of fire season.

Under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:

- Campfires, charcoal fires, and other open fires are prohibited except in designated developed campgrounds and picnic areas or by permit.

- Portable stoves that use gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel remain allowed.

- Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles, buildings, developed recreation sites, or areas cleared of flammable vegetation.

- Activities that can generate sparks, especially during hot, dry, and windy conditions, should be avoided.

These restrictions are being enacted because fire danger is increasing rapidly across Nevada. Dry fuels, warm temperatures, and forecasted thunderstorms with gusty outflow winds create conditions where a single spark can quickly become a large wildfire.

North Lyon Fire encourages everyone to use extra caution while recreating outdoors. Before heading out, know the fire restrictions in the area you plan to visit and avoid activities that could start a fire.

Remember:
One less spark means one less wildfire.

As temperatures climb and vegetation continues to dry across Northern Nevada, we want to remind everyone to use extreme caution when target shooting in areas with grass, brush, or other dry fuels.

Many wildfires throughout the West are started by recreational shooting. Steel-core, armor-piercing, or tracer ammunition can produce sparks when striking rocks or metal targets. Even standard ammunition can generate enough heat and friction to ignite dry vegetation under the right conditions.

Today and tomorrow, our area is approaching critical fire weather conditions, with low humidity, hot temperatures, and increasing winds. The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for areas just west of Fernley, highlighting the elevated fire danger across the region.

If you choose to target shoot:

- Avoid shooting in areas with dry grass or brush.
- Use established shooting locations with minimal vegetation.
- Do not use tracer, incendiary, or steel-core ammunition.
- Keep water, a fire extinguisher, and hand tools readily available.
- Clear vegetation away from target areas whenever possible.
- Stop shooting immediately if conditions become windy.

A single spark can quickly become a fast-moving wildfire that threatens lives, homes, livestock, and critical infrastructure.

Please help us keep our community safe by making responsible choices and remaining aware of current fire conditions. If you see smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 immediately.

* WHAT...High temperatures ranging from 98 to 102 degrees with warm overnight lows between 65 to 70 degrees. Widespread Moderate Heat Risk with isolated areas of Major HeatRisk in lower valleys.

* WHERE...Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.

* WHEN...Until 5 AM PDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Heat-related illnesses will be more likely, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors, in poorly cooled indoor spaces, or who are sensitive to heat.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.

Last week, we introduced you to the Hurst Spreader, a powerful rescue tool used to force apart vehicle components and create space for trapped occupants. This week, we’re highlighting another important piece of our vehicle extrication equipment: the Hurst Cutters.

Cutters are hydraulic rescue tools designed to cut through metal during emergency rescue operations. They allow firefighters to quickly cut vehicle roofs, doors, hinges, pillars, and other structural components when patients are trapped following a crash.

Today’s vehicles are engineered with advanced safety features and high-strength steel that help protect occupants during collisions. While these improvements increase survivability, they can also make vehicle extrications more complex. Cutters provide our firefighters with the capability to safely and efficiently remove these obstacles and gain access to patients in need.

Like all of our rescue equipment, our personnel train extensively with the Cutters to ensure they can operate them effectively when every second counts. Whether responding to a rollover on Interstate 80 or a serious traffic collision on one of our local roadways, these tools help us provide rapid access to patients and begin lifesaving medical care.

Stay tuned as we continue our rescue tool series and introduce more of the specialized equipment carried on North Lyon Fire apparatus.

This past week, North Lyon Fire crews remained busy responding to emergencies throughout our community. While medical incidents continue to account for the majority of our calls, we also saw an increase in the number of traffic collisions.

We want to remind everyone that safe driving starts with staying focused on the task at hand. Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable crashes. Whether it’s a cell phone, vehicle touchscreen, eating, adjusting the radio, or other distractions, taking your attention off the road for even a few seconds can have serious consequences. Please buckle up, put the phone down, and give driving your full attention.

As summer temperatures continue to rise across Northern Nevada, we also encourage residents to be mindful of fire safety. Hot, dry conditions can quickly turn a small spark into a fast-moving wildfire. Please use caution when towing trailers, operating equipment in dry vegetation, welding or grinding outdoors, and recreating on public lands.

A few simple steps can help prevent wildfires:
- Properly extinguish campfires.
- Avoid parking vehicles in tall, dry grass.
- Secure trailer safety chains to prevent sparks.
- Dispose of smoking materials responsibly.
